Sudan, surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan, positioned next to East, West, South and North Africa, is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan’s children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofan’s, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan’s school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.

How can you make a difference?

Purpose for the post:

On behalf of the IASC Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan and UNICEF (as the lead agency for the IASC Child Protection sub-cluster coordination) and in collaboration with national and sub-national Authorities, the main purpose of the Child Protection Sub-Cluster Coordinator post is to provide leadership and facilitate the processes that will ensure a well-coordinated, coherent, strategic and effective Child Protection cluster visioning, strategy formulation and the articulation/modification of a Road Map to provide adequate Child Protection responses to emergency affected populations and across the Humanitarian Development and Peace Nexus (HDPN).

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

1. Inclusion of key sectoral humanitarian, durable solutions and development partners 2. Establishment and maintenance of appropriate coordination mechanisms at National and at Sub National level and across the humanitarian development peace nexus 3. Coordination with national/local authorities, State institutions, local civil society and other actors 4. Attention to priority cross-cutting issues 5. Planning and Strategy Development 6. Application of Standards 7. Monitoring and Reporting 8. Advocacy and Resource Mobilization 9. Training and Capacity Building 10. Accountability to affected populations

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have

  • An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law, or another relevant social science field.
  • A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible professional experience in child protection including, first-hand experiences in cluster coordination, psychosocial support (PSS) and Family Tracing and reunification (FTR) programs and projects for most vulnerable children including international work experience.

    Relevant experience in programme development in child protection related areas in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.

    Experience in both development and humanitarian contexts is an added advantage.

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic language is considered an asset.
