Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Information Management Unit (IMU), within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Campaigns and Country Operations Division (CCOD), Department of Global Communications (DGC) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The IMU provides knowledge management support to the global network of UN information centres (UNICs), facilitating information sharing between DGC offices at Headquarters and in the field.

The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Chief of ICS and reports directly to the Chief of the Programme Support Section in ICS.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent may be responsible for the following duties: - Oversees the programmatic, administrative, and technical tasks necessary for the functioning of the Unit; manages, guides, develops and trains staff under his or her supervision; fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Unit and across organizational boundaries. - Produces or oversees production of digital information communications products for dissemination to the global network of UN Information Centres (UNICs), to include proposing topics; undertaking research; determining appropriate platforms and target audience; preparing production plans; writing drafts; obtaining clearances and finalising texts; editing copy; and coordinating design approval, production procedures and distribution, Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in newsletters, reports, manuals, standard operating procedures, etc. - Ensures implementation of communications programmes and tools to publicise priority issues and/or major events carried out by UNICs, to include drafting communication strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analysing the outcome. Participates in selecting the communications transmitted to key constituencies. Monitors and analyses current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. - Effectively coordinates actions relative to the administration of human resource activities in the Unit (e.g. 10 recruitment, placement, promotion, performance appraisal, job classification reviews, training, etc.), ensuring consistency in the application of UN rules and procedures and in collaboration with relevant focal points. - Takes the lead with respect to the preparation and implementation of the work programme of the Unit, ensuring that financial resources are utilized to implement activities in accordance with the Programme Budget and allotments issued. - Oversees the identification of office technology needs and maintenance of equipment, software and systems utilised in providing information dissemination support to the UNICs, coordinating enhancements as necessary. Researches, analyses and evaluates new technologies to support communications activities, making recommendations for their deployment. - Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries. - Performs other related duties as required.

Education An advanced level university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication, public information, information systems or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public information, journalism, information management, or related area is required.

Experience working with both traditional and new media platforms, preferably in an international environment is required.

Experience working in an operation with a field component is required.

Experience working in communications in the UN common system or a similar international organization is desirable.

Experience managing staff performance is desirable.

Experience providing support to information systems utilised in promoting global communications campaigns, including web content management systems such as Drupal, or similar; online collaboration tools such as knowledge sharing platforms (Microsoft Sharepoint and Teams or similar); web-based video conference systems such as Microsoft Teams, GoToWebinar, or similar is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
