Org. Setting and Reporting The Chief of the Video Section reports to the Deputy Director of the News and Content Branch in the News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications. The Video Section produces video content for broadcast, digital and social media platforms on the work of the United Nations across all the agencies, funds and programmes, and the priority themes of the Organization. The News and Media Division creates and broadcasts multimedia products on the work of the United Nations at Headquarters and around the world. It provides support services for journalists and monitors media coverage of UN issues.

The position is available as of 2 January 2021 for a period of 364 days with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following: •Plans and oversees the management of activities undertaken by the Section; ensures that substantive work programmes and programmed activities are carried out in a timely fashion, coordinating diverse projects in the Section, and, in liaison with other organizations of the United Nations System, donors and agencies as appropriate; •Plans, develops, co-ordinates and manages the programme output of video content, including features, news, social media and ad-hoc video content for platforms ranging from magazine/documentaries, web-based and social media; •Provides editorial guidance and close supervision of the production of the output, sets editorial priorities, to ensure balance and relevant coverage of the UN priorities in all productions; •Manages, supervises and carries out the work programme of the Section under his/her responsibility. Initiates programme ideas and reviews proposals from all sources inside and outside the Organization, including co-production suggestions from UN Agencies, digital video, film and television entities, and independent film makers; •Co-ordinates the work carried out by the Section; provides programmatic and substantive reviews of drafts prepared by others; •Maintains close liaison with digital media outlets, commercial and public broadcasting organizations, liaises with the Partnerships Unit to ensure the widest possible dissemination of UN Video products and services; •Develops new approaches to programming by keeping updated on changing industry standards. Advises on standards throughout the Department, and across duty stations; •Contributes to the reporting to intergovernmental bodies on budget/programme performance or on programmatic/ substantive issues, as appropriate, particularly those presented in biannual and/or annual reports; •Ensures that the outputs produced by the Section maintain high-quality standards; that reports are clear, objective and based on comprehensive data. Ensures that all outputs produced by the Section under his/her supervision meet required standards before completion to ensure they comply with the relevant mandates; •Creates timely reports for intergovernmental bodies and inputs for speeches, and works towards impact analysis and performance monitoring of all content including gathering data across platforms in collaboration with other parts of the Department; •Prepares inputs for the work programme of the Branch/Service/Division, determining priorities, allocating resources and approving payments for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery; •Carries out programmatic/administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Section, including preparation of budgets, assigning and monitoring of performance parameters and critical indicators, reporting on budget/programme performance, preparation of inputs for results-based budgeting, evaluation of staff performance (PAS), interviews of candidates for job openings and evaluation of candidates; •Recruits staff for Section, taking due account of geographical and gender balance and other institutional values; •Manages, guides, develops and trains staff under his/her supervision; •Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Section, and works with teams across the Division and Department, and across organizational boundaries; •Other duties, as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in communications, journalism, film, and television or related areas. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in television/video production, editing and post-production and broadcast journalism at the national and international level is required. Experience with the latest technical developments and production techniques with respect to video are required. Experience with latest broadcast and digital video platforms is required. A minimum of three years of managerial experience overseeing a video/film production team in a multilingual, intergovernmental organization is desirable. Experience with news and social media production is desirable. Experience with producing reports on video performance analysis is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
