Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Arabic Verbatim Reporting Section, Verbatim Reporting Service, Meetings and Publishing Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) in New York. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Verbatim Reporting Service.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following duties:

•Supervises and evaluates the work and performance of the Revisers and Verbatim Reporters of the Section. •Recruits temporary staff for the General Assembly and other bodies as required. •Under a programme defined by the Chief of Service, provides Verbatim Reporters and potential Revisers with practical training to develop and refine the various facets of their work. •Plans and organizes the daily distribution of work of the Section and monitors its progress. •Revises verbatim records. •Ensures that the final text meets the requisite standards expected of United Nations official records. •Provides advice and guidance to Revisers and Verbatim Reporters for solving difficult problems requiring specialized knowledge, linguistic insight and political judgment. •Assists the Chief of Service, as required, in the preparation of terminological materials intended to serve the urgent needs of the Service. •Collaborates with other Arabic Language Sections/Units of the Department in the preparation and conduct of Competitive Examinations for Language Positions (CELPs) for Arabic. - Participates in interviews of finalists of United Nations Language Competitive Examinations. •May serve as officer-in-charge in the absence of the Chief of Service. •Performs other related duties, as required.

Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors or relevant United Nations language competitive examinations held before 2017.

Work Experience A minimum of ten years of experience in translation, precis-writing, editing, verbatim reporting or copy preparing, proofreading, production editing is required.

Experience in verbatim reporting is desirable.

Managerial experience is desirable.

Languages Fluency in Arabic, which must be the candidate’s main language, and an excellent knowledge of English and another official United Nations Language, is required.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
