Aside from helping you understand the Organization's mandate, programmes and main thrusts, it also enhances your academic knowledge with relevant work assignments that can help you prepare for your future career. As the statistical agency of UNESCO, the UIS has functional autonomy and applies rigorous professional standards to produce high-quality data, methodologies and global standards. The Institute is hosted by the Université de Montréal at the École des hautes études commerciales (HEC Montréal). The UIS is seeking two enthusiastic individuals for internships within the Administration Unit. Long Description ---------------- ***Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:*** - Monitoring the implementation of UNESCO budgets; - Identifying variances between approved budgets and actual expenditures; - Generate financial information using databases and spreadsheets; - Research and compile historical information relating to mandates, historical expenditure pattern, adopted strategies, economic and social context, as they relate to budget submissions - Ensure that resource requirements are in line with the applicable rules and regulations and with the mandates of the Governing Board - Perform sensitivity and risk analysis - Providing support to ongoing projects; - Administrative support; - Consolidating and sorting data; - Working on presentations; Long Description ---------------- ***Learning objectives*** The successful candidate would be able to improve knowledge in the following areas: - Budgeting and Finance management in UNESCO; - Global challenges and related mandates, programmes and resources entrusted to the UIS to address them; - Budget preparation practices in the UIS; - Regulatory frameworks governing the Programme Planning and Budgeting in UNESCO; - Information technology systems related to budget and finance in UNESCO; - Researching and analysing large sets of data and summarize / present it for decision-making purposes. - Administrative support services within the UNESCO context **COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)** ------------------------------------ Accountability (C) Communication (C) Innovation (C) Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement (C) Planning and organizing (C) Results focus (C) Teamwork (C) **-** ----- For detailed information, please consult the [UNESCO Competency Framework](https://en.unesco.org/sites/default/files/competency_framework_e.pdf). **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** --------------------------- ***Education*** - Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); - Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) in business or public administration, finance or related area; or - Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in a or b above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; - If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in business or public administration, finance or related area ***Skills and competencies*** - Be computer literate in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment scanner, printer, etc.). - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of UNESCO and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter. - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. - Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed. - Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings. - Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology. ***Languages*** - English and French are the working languages of UNESCO. For the position advertised, fluency in written and oral English is required and proficiency in French is desirable.
