Located in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ituri Province is a region with a complex operational context. The province has experienced significant political, social, and economic challenges throughout its history, which have contributed to a volatile environment.

The security situation in Ituri province remains alarming, and civilians continue to suffer violent attacks from non-state armed groups. According to the Commission Mouvement de Population (CMP), on June 30, the province was hosting 1.8 million internally displaced people, while at the beginning of 2023, reports indicated 1.6 million, a reminder of the persistence of conflict in the province.

UNHCR monitoring reports indicate nearly 14,000 human rights violations by November 2023. In some cases, attacks by non-state armed groups have directly targeted sites of internal displacement, resulting in the deaths of over 50 people, the majority of whom were women and children. These senseless acts of violence only exacerbate the suffering of those already affected by the conflict.

UNHCR in Ituri province has successfully secured multiple funding including UN Pool funds and from traditional donors. However , despite the efforts of the humanitarian community to respond to the multiple needs, shortfalls persist due to the upsurge in violence.
