UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism **OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST** ----------------------------------------- Under the overall authority and direct supervision of the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Jakarta, and in liaison with the Graphic Designer, the Communications and Public Information Officer shall co-ordinate and perform a full range of duties while in close coordination with programme sector specialists in UNESCO Jakarta (including the Antenna office in Dili, Timor Leste) as well as with CPE unit in HQs to ensure a structured approach to service delivery. More specifically, the incumbent shall undertake the following tasks and responsibilities: 1\. Media Strategy Development and implementation • Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of the office communications strategy and plan linked to UNESCO’s programmes and projects to ensure visibility of projects/programmes in relevant media. • Support the development and execution of advocacy campaigns. • Develop and execute a social media strategy to support continued engagement of target audiences and maintain projects/programmes visibility Long Description ---------------- 2\. Content development • Develop public information materials (press releases, feature articles, etc.) for local (in Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Timor Leste) media as well as sub-regional and international media (both traditional and new media) in professional journalistic style, and in coordination with the appropriate units within the office whilst ensuring adherence to UNESCO policies and procedures governing media releases. 3\. Media relations • Develop strategic media partnerships and sustain professional relationships with journalists and other key external constituencies at national, and sub-regional levels, covering Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Timor Leste. • Ensure wide media coverage and dissemination of UNESCO’s Strategy and activities. Liaise with third-party contractor’s/video production crews, etc., to assist in the coverage of events whilst coordinating production and advocacy design. • Provide advisory to UNESCO Director and programme officers on the media matters, facilitate and support press inquiries/releases. • Identify and pursue opportunities to publicize UNESCO Jakarta’s initiatives further. Propose and assist in the coordination of activities to engage media e.g., press conferences, familiarization trips, events launch, etc. • Organize speaking opportunities and interviews for UNESCO Leadership as necessary and/or when requested. Media Monitoring • Proactively monitor UNESCO mentions in traditional and new media to identify and respond to issues promptly in the best interest of the organization, and to ensure upholding and strengthening of the organization’s reputation. • Maintain active social media engagement and leverage digital technologies to disseminate and promote outreach activities. Provide advice to the Programme units in UNESCO Jakarta on means of increasing media exposure as well as on analytics measuring exposure in new media. • Evaluate and report on traditional media and social media trends, issues in the country and/or region, monitor media statistics, social media, and web usage, and adapt content, editorial and outreach priorities accordingly. • Provide advice to the Programme units in UNESCO Jakarta on means of increasing media exposure as well as on analytics measuring exposure in new media. • Update the office website on a regular basis, proactively resolve technical issues and ensure overall brand coordination with HQ Web team. UN Partners relations • Work with communications personnel in the UN System and partner organizations in Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and in Timor Leste (in liaison and coordination with the Antenna Office in Dili) to strengthen coverage and visibility in close coordination with the Director’s Office to determine relevancy/adequacy of UNESCO’s contribution, and to ensure UNESCO benefits from joint initiatives. • Build and maintain effective working relationships and communication channels with representatives of United Nations departments, funds and agencies in the countries covered by the office to develop ways to implement communications campaigns system-wide and to incorporate the campaign message and themes into all relevant events and products. 6\. Knowledge Management • Develop templates to support documentation of best practices and “lessons learnt”. • Support the maintenance of contact lists of key stakeholders and media contacts. Coordinate dissemination of reports and other publications produced or commissioned by UNESCO. • Keep abreast of latest digital technologies to enhance advocacy. 7\. Work Experience: • Minimum 4 years’ experience in development of communication strategies, Public Relations, Marketing, Public Info/ media relations, journalism and/or relevant social sciences. • Experience in crafting communication strategies geared towards results-based management. • Capability and proven experience in crafting messages in various formats (press releases, success stories, blog entries, etc.) targeting a variety of audiences. • Proven track record of successful media relations, coverage and dissemination. Skills: • Good understanding of traditional and social media. • Excellent coordination, networking, interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Ability to manage sensitive information in a confidential manner • Ability to work in a multicultural environment. • Excellent knowledge of IT and basic computer packages (i.e. word, Excel, PowerPoint) • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize and great attention to detail Languages: • Excellent knowledge of English and Bahasa Indonesia. **DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS** ---------------------------- Education: - Advanced degree (Masters) in Communications, Journalism, or related field. - Professional affiliation to credit Communications and/or Journalists Association is an added advantage.
