This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Based in Beirut and headed by a Representative/Head of Office, OHCHR Syria (https://www.ohchr.org/EN/Countries/MENARegion/Pages/OHCHRSyria.aspx) has a broad human rights mandate structured around four main components: monitoring and reporting, rule of law and transitional justice, civil society and technical cooperation, and human rights in humanitarian action. A dedicated unit supports each of the four sectors, and the office has an administrative team to support the staff and the programming. The UNV assignment will support the Office in developing and implementing a communication strategy to support its programming and advocacy.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Representative or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will: • Assist in developing and implementing a communications strategy; • Support the Office in establishing/managing OHCHR Syria’s social media accounts; • Work with Office colleagues to develop content (stories, posts, captions) and key messages to be shared on OHCHR Syria’s digital platforms; • Support the Office in developing print and multimedia resources in line with OHCHR branding; • Assist with EN/AR translation and proofreading of OHCHR Syria outputs; • Conduct any other related tasks as required or assigned by the supervisor.

• Planning and organizing: effective organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to manage a large volume of work in an efficient and timely manner; ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor (own) work; ability to work under pressure, with conflicting deadlines, and to handle multiple concurrent projects/activities;

• Communication: proven interpersonal skills; good spoken and written communication skills, including ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to conduct presentations, articulate options and positions concisely; ability to make and defend recommendations; ability to communicate and empathize with staff (including national staff), military personnel, volunteers, counterparts and local interlocutors coming from very diverse backgrounds; capacity to transfer information and knowledge to a wide range of different target groups;

• Genuine commitment towards the principles of voluntary engagement, which includes solidarity, compassion, reciprocity and self-reliance; and commitment towards OHCHR’s mission and vision, as well as to the UN Core Values.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in Beirut, LEBANON. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions.
