**OVERVIEW** ------------ Parent Sector : Office of International Standards and Legal Affairs (LA) Duty Station: Paris Job Family: Law Type of contract : Non Staff Level : Duration of contract : From 1 to 6 months Recruitment open to : External candidates Application Deadline (Midnight Paris Time) : 18-AUG-2023 UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism **OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST** ----------------------------------------- Within the general mandate of the Office of International Standards and Legal Affairs to provide legal advice to the Secretariat and the governing bodies of the Organization, and under the overall authority of the Legal Adviser and Director of the Office, the incumbent will be required to carry out the following duties and responsibilities: - Drafting legal opinions and undertaking research and studies and examining legal precedents for issues relating to the functions, structure and activities of the Organization. Such issues may bear upon the general field or upon specialized aspects of public international law. - Drafting appropriate opinions and other relevant correspondence on a wide variety of legal problems which can arise prior or during the execution of the Organization's programme. - Drafting and revising documents to be submitted to the Organization's governing bodies; the General Conference and the Executive Board. Studying and evaluating all files and documents submitted for decision, evaluation and signature, in addition to preparing complete files on issues under consideration. - Assisting the Director during intergovernmental meetings. - Performing other duties as assigned. **COMPETENCIES (Core / Managerial)** ------------------------------------ Accountability (C) Communication (C) Knowledge sharing and continuous improvement (C) Planning and organizing (C) Results focus (C) Teamwork (C) Professionalism (C) **-** ----- For detailed information, please consult the [UNESCO Competency Framework](https://en.unesco.org/sites/default/files/competency_framework_e.pdf). **REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS** --------------------------- - Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international law. - Professional experience providing advice in public international law within an intergovernmental organization or equivalent legal experience in a government, non-profit organization, law firm or academia. - Excellent knowledge of English or French and very good knowledge of the other language. **DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS** ---------------------------- - Professional experience acquired at the international level. - Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the law of international organizations, particularly in the UN system. - Experience in the legal department of an intergovernmental organization. - Experience working in a diplomatic environment. - Experience working with intergovernmental bodies. - Confirmed experience in legal drafting in English and French. **APPLICATION PROCESS** ----------------------- **Individuals to be hired on a service contract must have the right to live and work in the duty station in which they will serve (for this position, at UNESCO's headquarters, in France).** **SELECTION AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS** ------------------------------------- Please note that all candidates must complete an on-line application and provide complete and accurate information.
