Duties and Responsibilities Background of the assignment:

United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are:

  • to advance understanding of crime-related problems;
  • to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
  • to support the respect of international instruments and other standards;
  • to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

Under the supervision of the Rome Liaison Officer, the Individual Contractor shall build the mentioned UNICRI archives through:

  • Review physical and online sources to identify materials relating to key historical events, statutory documents, and governance documents, including all formal documents of the UNICRI Board of Trustees, as well as significant reports, decisions, and assessments relating to its statute, institutional status, and development; such review will include historical documents of UNICRI stored in Rome and Turin.

  • Assist in searching for, requesting, obtaining, and reviewing relevant materials from public and private libraries and funds and UN sources.

  • Implement a sustainable cataloguing system for the above-mentioned archive materials, both physical and online, as relevant; for online materials, the system should be compatible with the databases and software currently in use at UNICRI.

  • Prepare content for inclusion in appropriate web pages of the official UNICRI website relating to the archives.

  • Provide support and training to UNICRI staff and library patrons in using electronic resources and reference tools.

  • Prepare the user-guide (SOP) for the end-users of the new cataloguing system, for future reference; prepares a hand-over for UNICRI personnel prior to completion of the service.

  • Prepare a short narrative report (maximum 5 pages singled-spaced) that summarizes and describes the work done to create the UNICRI archives and the status of the same at the end of the consultancy, including recommendations for related follow up activities.

  • Undertakes other job-related duties as assigned, including library digitization operations, when and as needed.

    Qualifications/special skills A High School diploma is required. A first level University Degree (Bachelor or equivalent) or a specialized training in Library and Information Science or other similar fields is desirable. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in library work, archives management, information network management, or another similar field is required.

    Languages Fluency in oral and written English is required. Good working knowledge of Italian language (host country language) and/or French is desirable.
