This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Under the supervision of Officer In Charge of Sector 6 or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Air Operations Assistant will:

  • Plan the Sector Daily Flight Schedule which is submitted to Mission Air Operations Centre for approval.
  • Make an Air Tasking Order from the Daily Flight Schedule and give to aircrew for execution.
  • Monitor all flights in the sectors.
  • Support 24/7/365 Air Medical Evacuation
  • Assist OIC Air Ops , Air Liaison Program is current
  • Assist OIC Air Ops to ensure Airport Fire is Category 3
  • Brief the aircrew and sector aviation staff members on Notice to Air Men (NOTAMS) and other available information concerning flight operations.
  • Liaise with AMISOM; for related Air Operations T/A, AORM and MATO from Sector 2
  • Secure mine and security clearance, threat assessment reports.
  • Take charge of all aviation property in the sector to include the air assets and aviation equipment.
  • Coordinate with other units and agencies pertaining to air operations matters.
  • Provide weather conditions at destinations and forward operating Bases.
  • Report all changes and deviations to Mission Air Operation Centre.
  • Report all safety hazards in the sectors; to OIC Air Ops and Chief Aviation Services
  • Assist OIC Air ops, to Maintain a database of crew lists and risk assessment forms.
  • Check fuel status and availability both in the sector and its team sites.
  • Maintain a file of all documents and prepares daily situation reports.
  • Assist in Maintain a database for flight hours and missions performed.
  • Assist in Monitor the maintenance of aircraft and flight hours and crew duty time.
  • Perform other duties as required by OIC Sector Aviation Services.

Educational additional comments

High school or equivalent diploma is required. Technical or vocational certificate in aviation- related activities (air operations, air traffic control, maintenance, dispatch, etc.), or a graduate of an equivalent military institution is required. Air Traffic Service license is an advantage. Experience working in the UN system is an asset;

Experience remark

  • The incumbent must be a dynamic, multi-functional person, who supports UNSOS Aviation Section with professionalism, dedication, and client orientation. The following qualifications are required:
  • High school or equivalent diploma is required. Technical or vocational certificate in aviation- related activities (air operations, air traffic control, maintenance, dispatch, etc.), or a graduate of an equivalent military institution is required. Air Traffic Service license is an advantage. Experience working in the UN system is an asset;
  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience in an occupation directly related to air operations. Experience in air operations is a requirement. Experience in Peacekeeping missions is an advantage.
  • Sound knowledge of the Aviation industry;
  • Knowledge in handling dangerous goods is an advantage;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Must possess communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical staff at all levels in a clear and concise manner style;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in UNSOS’ volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
