Organizational Setting

The key mission of the FAO Representation in Somalia, which is led by the FAO Representative (FAOR), is to assist and support the national government in developing policies, strategies and programme aimed at accelerating the implementation and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in FAO's global mandate and strategic objectives. More specifically, FAO's response aims to address national needs and priorities in achieving food security, reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing agricultural, fishery and forestry sectors, ensuring the sustainable use of environmental and natural resources and responding to recurrent emergencies.

The current portfolio of activities of the FAO Representation in Somalia includes a wide scope of technical support interventions ranging from policy support through livestock and crop production to natural resource management, Nutrition, value chain, food security analysis and water and land information management. FAO is also implementing several emergency, resilience-building, and development interventions, with the support of its five field offices and close to 400 staff in partnership with the Federal and State line ministries.

The Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) is a multi-year, multi-donor programme managed by FAO Somalia. Its main objective is the provision of quality, timely and independent food security and nutrition related information and analyses to decision makers; it also provides food security and nutrition related capacity development support to Somali institutions.

Reporting Lines

The Agriculture and Market Data Analyst will be under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Somalia, and the direct supervision of the FSNAU Chief Technical Adviser.

Technical Focus

The Agriculture and Markets Data Analyst is responsible for analysing all FSNAU agriculture and market related data sets as well as secondary data sets received from partners and other sources.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Analyse agriculture and market related data sets using the relevant database and statistical software (MS Excel, Access, SPSS, etc) • Develop routine and non-routine analytical outputs (charts, graphs, tables, etc) • Assist in developing and enhancing the regular and ad hoc agriculture and market data collection instruments (data collection forms) ensuring all indicators are analytically relevant and eventually entered into a database • Assemble and ensure integrity of data sets, tables, charts, etc when required by internal or external sources • Support analytical activities of the Food Security and Nutrition Teams as required • Assist in the preparation of monthly Market Update and the agriculture and market sections of FSNAU reports • Develop or enhance data management process (data collection, transfer, entry, cleaning) ensuring it is conducted to the highest technical level possible • Manage FSNAU agriculture and market data sets within with respect to data cleanliness, validation, and precision as well as administration of the system • Review, clean, process and store agriculture and market related data received from FSNAU field analysts • Participate in internal and external meetings related to agriculture and market data analyses • Any other related office duties as required

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced university degree in Statistics, Economics, or a related field • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in the processing, analysis and management of data related to markets, agriculture and related economic indicators • Good working knowledge (level C) of English and Somali language • National of the country (Somalia)
