BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee is the leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The resettlement office in Salt Lake City provides services to newly arrived refugees.

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Advisory Council Intern, under the supervision of the Community & Civic Engagement Coordinator, will assist with planning the second cohort of the IRC SLC New American Advisory Council (NAAC), which is a group of refugees & new Americans that will help the office shape priorities and approaches that will help improve how we serve current and future clients.

This is an eight-week paid internship, working 35 hours per week. Student Leaders also attend the weeklong and all-expense paid Bank of America Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC in July 17-22.

Major Responsibilities:

- Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Assist the Community & Civic Engagement Coordinator with developing the second cohort of the IRC SLC’s New American Advisory Council (NAAC). - Collaborate with other IRC offices in the United States to learn best practices from their advisory council board models. - Assist with developing a recruitment plan and proposed timeline for Advisory Council implementation. - Develop recruitment materials using design programs. - Attend various meetings, including managers meeting, all staff meeting, and program meetings. - Other Duties as Assigned (office support, front desk, etc.).

Preferred Intern Skills:

- Experience using Microsoft Office Platforms. - Ability to stay organized and use IRC’s cloud-based content management system as designed. - Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal communication as well as cross-cultural communication. - Willingness to learn about the IRC’s services and programs. - Previous experience with graphic design preferred but not required.

Job Requirements:

- Committed to 8 weeks working a minimum of 35 hours per week. - Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. - Attention to detail and accuracy in work product. - Fluent in English, both spoken and written; proficiency in language(s) spoken by client group is desired. - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.

Working Environment:

- A combination of standard office environment and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities. - May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
