Job Description

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC in Wichita has resettled more than 2,000 refugees since it opened and provided numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC Economic Empowerment project aligns with the Economic Opportunity focus area of the AmeriCorps VISTA program.

SCOPE OF WORK: The IRC Youth Summer Program is an eight-week program focusing on preparing refugee youth who arrived within two years to succeed at their grade level in the Wichita public school system and support their social emotional well-being. Youth Program AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates are expected to collaborate with IRC Program Coordinator to design pre- and post-assessments, submit culturally relevant lesson daily plans, teach Literacy/English Language Arts, Math, and implement social emotional well-being curriculums for a class of approximately 20-30 students. In addition, Summer Associates are responsible for observing, assessing, recording, and monitoring students’ individual progress on students’ individual goals during summer. Through the program, this position requires fostering students’ social-emotional development and building academic confidence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Develop the summer curriculum and assessment - In coordination with IRC program coordinators, plan 5 weeks of culturally responsive, trauma-informed lesson plans for a class of approximately 15-20 students - Design and record pre- and post- formative assessments - Plan and coordinate classroom activities - Implement a 5-week curriculum - Submit detailed, daily lesson plans weekly, in advance of date of instruction - Lead classroom climate and culture in accordance with program protocols - Manage dismissal protocols - Regularly review student progress and maintain bodies of evidence for each student including work samples - Correct data and evaluate the program - Complete on pre- and post- assessments for each student in assigned class - Review student progress and the summer curriculum - Complete all required reporting on time. Comply with all agency policies and protocols - Attend trainings and meetings - Participate in VISTA Virtual Member Orientation and IRC onboarding trainings - Participate in daily meetings lead by IRC program coordinator as well as weekly all staff and AmeriCorps VISTA meetings - Other duties as described

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s in education or related field preferred - Teaching experience with children or youth, specifically in the context of a classroom, educational, and/or social-emotional program, is highly desirable - Experience teaching English Language Learners is required - Strong classroom management skills and prior professional experience teaching and social emotional learning, highly desirable - Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations, highly desirable - Ability to work independently and as part of a team - Highly organized, dependable, responsive, and collaborative work style - Strength in cultural competency-building - Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English. - Strong presentation skills - Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook). - Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area
