- Field experience is an asset.
- Ability to write clearly and concisely.
- Initiative, sound judgment and ability to work harmoniously with diverse staff.
- Fluency in English is required, and French is desirable.

The Programme Specialist works in the West and Central Africa Regional Office of UNFPA, contributing to policy and programming efforts related to youth, peace and security in the West & Central Africa region. The Specialist will be engaged in inter-agency initiatives, joint programming efforts and will contribute actively to multi stakeholder partnerships with partners from the UN system, civil society, regional organizations and academic institutions.
The Specialist will report to the WCARO Gender Advisor, and will have a dual reporting line to the Youth, Peace and Security Technical Specialist in the Technical Division at Headquarters.

Job Purpose:
Working within UNFPA’s West & Central Africa Regional Office, you will provide strategic and technical support on youth, peace and security at regional and country level. The Specialist will support peacebuilding programming efforts focused on adolescents, young people and women in countries of the West & Central Africa region, with a specific focus on the Sahel. The position will directly support UNFPA’s contribution to the implementation of the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS) and the UN Support Plan for the Sahel.
Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
- Advance degree in social sciences or related fields, with specialized knowledge in the field of peace and security and/or humanitarian settings;
Knowledge and Experience:
- At least 5 years of professional experience in the field of peace and security, and/or humanitarian issues, with a focus on young people;
- Experience in programme/ project management including experience designing and appraising proposals and actively liaising with relevant and potential project partners;
- Field experience is an asset;
- Ability to write clearly and concisely;
- Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds;
Languages:
- Fluency in English is required, and French is desirable to enable effective communication with English speaking and French speaking country coordination groups and local organizations (West and Central Africa region).
