Overview

Provide administrative coordination for environmental projects and youth engagement efforts.

You have:

• Advanced university degree (Masters’ degree or equivalent) in communications, political science, environmental management or a related field required.
• A Bachelor’s university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area.
• Strong track record of designing projects that secure buy-in and generate results.
• Able to deliver highly complex projects of a global nature efficiently and effectively.
• Able to bring a diverse group of individuals and partners together to agree a collective programme of work and write high-quality reports and proposals.
• Experience of working with youth and youth organizations.
• Ability to think creatively about how to evolve pre-existing programmes to have maximum impact.
• Fluency in oral and written English is required.
• Computer literate in standard software applications; able to work independently; have good interpersonal skills.

Result of Service

Duties and Responsibilities

UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda and promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The Education and Youth Unit oversees the education outreach and a series of youth projects for UN Environment at its headquarters in Nairobi. This includes everything from engaging working with formal education partners in Higher Education to non-formal education partners such as Girl Guides, Scouts and the video gaming sector to extend the reach of environmental education to mass-reach partners. UN Environment UNEP is seeking to scale-up the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge through several projects in Africa and the Pacific and Caribbean region and work in this space, with existing and new partners brought on board, a deepening of the engagement with young people especially in rural locations With the financial support of the UK Government, Norway and GEF UNEP is seeking to extend the reach of its work in multiple locations with a focus on engaging youth around the thematic of plastic pollution. The individual contractor will be located in Nairobi, Kenya and would be a team member of the UNEP / Ecosystems Division Youth Education & Advocacy Unit and would report to the Chief of Unit. 4.1 Tasks and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the non-formal education lead, Youth, Education & Advocacy Unit, the contractor will do the following work: 1) Work on the delivery of the Tide Turners Plastics Challenge Project phase 5.2: Work with the delivery partners (WAGGGS, WOSM, Captain Planet, CEE, WWF) and ensure that the partner deliverables are met for the second funding phase: - Continue to operate as the focal point for the delivery partners of the Tide Turners programme and ensure that all the partners deliverables are met. - Organize an Africa event for the programme together with partners, likely for UNEA 6 in Nairobi in collaboration with Member States. - Ensure that the deliverables are met for the second funding phase and support the delivery partners in the implementation of the programme per the deadline. - Ensure timely narrative and financial reporting from the partners and for the donor (narrative and financial). - Identify 2 partners in key countries and develop plan for project executing in those countries together with the partners with a proposal on what could be done for under-spend ready to deploy. - Support in communication efforts in close collaboration with the new UNV Comms Officer with monthly outreach to partners put in place. - Support in event organization with the aim of organizing 1 event with partners (webinar / discussion / update) put in place. 2) Support on the scaling up the Tide Turners Programme in the Pacific and Caribbean regions: Continue working with the regional coordinators and with identified partners to take forward the launch of the launch of the Programme in the Caribbean and Pacific region. The work will include the following: - Support the regional coordinators in the programme delivery in target countries. - Support the regional coordinators in communications efforts. - Support the Chief of Unit to ensure that the funding requirements are met per the needs of the programme.
