Job Description

TITLE: Youth Development Intern (5) LOCATION: City Heights or El Cajon S******TART DATE**: August DURATION: 5 months (conclude in December), 10-20 hours/week

Important Note: This is an unpaid internship.

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. Founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein, the IRC is at work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities.

SCOPE OF WORK: IRC San Diego has operated Youth Programs in San Diego County since 1996, helping more than 300 refugee youth every year successfully stay in school, graduate, and transition to college or a career. The Youth Department’s focus is on newly arrived refugee and immigrant youth who may have experienced trauma and continue to navigate a great deal of stress through the process of acculturation and language acquisition. Throughout the year, IRC’s Youth Department facilitates a variety of programs to support students academically in school and with the development of social emotional assets. Youth Development Interns will support all programing at one of five school sites or clusters: Hoover High School, Crawford High School, El Cajon Valley High School, Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) and Cajon Valley Union School District (CVUSD).

RESPONSIBILITIES: Youth Development Interns will be assigned to one of five positions depending on interest, skillset, and availability. All interns will be responsible for supporting school-based programming for semester one of the 2023-2024 academic year. Interns will assist Youth Program Department staff with student outreach, program development, program implementation, administration, and field trip support as relevant. All Youth Program Department work is focused on the development of social emotional assets in the areas of Brain Building, Emotion Regulation, Positive Social Skills, Conflict Resolution and Perseverance. Interns will learn how to facilitate programming in a trauma informed, culturally responsive manner; and learn how to cultivate an equitable, welcoming environment. Interns based at Hoover, Crawford, or Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) will also support academic tutoring and English Language development and are expected to work 1:1 or with small groups of students to guide learning and academic growth. Interns may be asked to support additional programming including Higher Education Financial Aid workshops and family engagement programs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Intern will learn how to coordinate engaging, skill-building activities for high school or middle school students using trauma-informed and culturally/linguistically responsive practices. 2. Intern will develop skills to empower refugee and immigrant youth through supporting their social emotional learning. 3. Intern will gain insight on various refugee and immigrant issues, and support the systems that enable them to thrive. 4. Intern will be able to provide basic program management support including but not limited to outreach and recruitment, intake, data entry, lesson planning and group program facilitation. 5. Interns (Hoover, Crawford, GUHSD) will be able to provide academic support tailored to the needs of English Language Learners.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS: · Currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or certificate program · Must be living in San Diego, CA, and comfortable working in person · Must have reliable transportation · Must have availability Monday – Friday between the hours of 2 pm and 6 pm at least twice per week. Schedule will vary by program site. · Experience working with youth, refugees and/or English Language Learners ages 11-18 a plus · Experience working in a diverse, multi-cultural setting a plus · Able to commit 10-20 hours per week through December 2023 · Bilingual or multilingual strongly preferred in Pashto, Farsi/Dari, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Haitian Creole, or other common refugee language.
