This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement of young people across the Asia-Pacific region calling for urgent action on the climate agenda. Through climate strikes and effective use of media, young people have been calling for governments and other relevant stakeholders to take collective action on climate change. However, young people are often marginalized and excluded from the decision-making processes that will shape their futures.

In 2020, the Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform (YECAP) was established by UNDP Asia-Pacific and UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre for Asia-Pacific, RCC Bangkok, in collaboration with UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific, UNICEF South Asia, British Council, YOUNGO, Movers Programme and 2030 Youth Force as a safe and inclusive space for youth across Asia and the Pacific to meaningfully engage in climate action.

YECAP is providing an opportunity for a motivated youth volunteer to contribute to the field of climate change. This assignment offers valuable learning and development experiences, which contribute to the volunteer's personal and professional growth while making a meaningful impact on climate action initiatives and helping in the achievement of SDG 13.

Under the direct supervision of Regional Youth Project Manager, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Support the research and coordination of mapping of civil society organizations in the youth and climate space in the Asia-Pacific region • Contributes to coordination support for YECAP’s national mapping of civil society organizations in the region • Consolidates the mapping, including identification of potential partners for outreach • Supports the development of webpage for the civil society organization mappings for different countries • Support the development of communications materials and other outputs to disseminate the outcomes of YECAP to reach key target audiences at regional and national levels.

  2. Supports the capacity development of youth led civil society organizations • Assesses the needs of youth led civil society organizations for capacity development • Identifies entry points and approaches for strategies to engage with youth led civil society organizations • Coordinates the capacity development of youth-led civil society organizations

Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteer-ism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteer-ism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Thailand is located in Southeast Asia. The climate is tropical, with the monsoon season running from May/June through October/November. Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, and it is also the most populated city in the country. It is located in the Chao Phraya River delta in the central part of the country. Bangkok has an estimated population of 8.75 million as of 2017 (13% of Thailand’s total population), based on data from the 2010 census. Over the past decades, Bangkok has grown rapidly with little urban planning or regulation. This has led to traffic congestion and air pollution, and there is frequent flooding of streets during the rainy season in the City’s low-lying areas.

The cost of living in Thailand is relatively low, as compared to many other capitals in South-east Asia. Housing is widely available in various sizes and at various price points. Private healthcare in Thailand is of excellent standard, and there are numerous top hospitals in Bang-kok, which fall far below countries like the US in terms of price. There are numerous high-quality international schools available in Bangkok, with English as the language of instruction. Bangkok has different public transportation options, including the BTS Skytrain and MRT Underground, metered taxis, mobile-based ride-hailing services (Grab, All Thai Taxi, etc.), tuk tuks, motorbike taxis, buses and boats.
