Job Description

IRC Background:

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., IRC provides assistance to refugees resettling here through 27 offices operating in 16 states. IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994 and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees.

Job Overview:

The Education Assistant will support newly arrived families with accessing educational services with a focus on school-aged student’s orientations to the US school system by enrolling school-aged students in school by providing training to families and completing enrollment paperwork as well as adult ESL course enrollment. This included providing logistical support to help newly resettled adults and students learn how to get to schools such as walking and bus orientations on the first day of school. The Education Assistant will help new students and their parents and/or caregivers feel welcome in their new schools and will support other Education program services as needed.

Major Responsibilities:

• Conduct initial Youth and Education Intake and follow-up training on navigating the U.S. school system with recently resettled parents and caregivers

• Gather documents and complete school enrollment applications with school-aged students

• Teach students how to walk or take the bus to school and coordinate logistics with other IRC resettlement teams

• Complete school enrollment within 30 days of arrival and track in ETO and Salesforce databases

• Organize and put together school backpacks full of school supplies for new students

• Coordinate adult ESL testing and course enrollment for both in-person and virtual classes

• Provide basic computer-use digital skill training for parents and caregivers as needed

• Use personal, insured vehicle and/or public transportation (where available) to travel and transport clients and materials as needed throughout the service delivery area

• May train and lead the activities of volunteers and interns.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

Education/Work Experience:

• Associates Degree or equivalent preferred; or equivalent work experience, preferably in a non-profit or social services agency environment

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

• Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.

• Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.

• Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.

• Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.

• Fluent in English, both spoken and written; proficiency in language(s) spoken by IRC’s clients is desired; including Dari, Farsi, and/or Pashto.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research and problem-solving purposes.

• Valid driver’s license and access to a personal, insured vehicle.

Working Environment:

• A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.

• May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
