The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic, and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. Therefore the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

While the adolescent period is characterized by a period of heightened vulnerabilities, it also provides a window of opportunity for successful transition to adulthood and equality especially for the most disadvantaged adolescents. Identifying these most disadvantaged adolescents and designing our interventions to address the barriers that limit their fulfilment of rights to development, protection and participation is instrumental to breaking cycles of deprivation and poverty for these adolescents.

The intern will contribute for the implementation of the Youth and Adolescent Programme which is a key component of the Country Programme. The intern reports to the Youth and Adolescent Officer who is at Level NO-B.

Accountabilities :

Under the supervision of the Adolescent and Youth Officer, the intern will provide programmatic, knowledge generation and technical support to the youth programming as per the following:

  • Join partners meetings for the follow up of youth empowerment /Life skills programme implementation.
  • Draft minutes and share action points
  • Support on the documentation of reports for the engagement program.
  • Join the youth meetings for the youth advisory group
  • Support the documentation and the follow-up with the Youth advisory group.
  • Support knowledge generation and management of report from the PAR youth in the field.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Enrolled in a degree programme in an undergraduate or graduate school in one of the following fields: humanitarian sector preferably youth and volunteering program. Or have graduated within the past 2 years.
  • Excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of MS Office and computer skills (MS applications, especially Word, Publisher and Excel).
  • Strong command of English is essential. Knowledge of Arabic and/or French is considered an asset.
  • A high level of individual responsibility, commitment, and initiative.
  • Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
