The Young Professionals Programme

WHO Headquarters offers opportunities for young professionals from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to engage in WHO’s work and build skills and competence in key public health areas. This is a structured programme which incorporates additional exposure and experience at country level and career support.

Young Professionals will be assigned to regular WHO positions and will be fully immersed in WHO’s technical work. Young Professionals will benefit from career support, networking, mentoring and tailored learning opportunities throughout this period to support them in achieving their personal career goals. To enhance their knowledge and widen their professional network, the YPP may be posted in a different WHO office on short term learning assignments.

Eligibility criteria

The following eligibility criteria in addition to the minimum requirements of the position will be used to shortlist candidates:

  • To be no older than 35 years on 31 December of the year of application.
  • To be a national of a country eligible for the Programme: List of Eligible Countries.
  • To hold a relevant university degree obtained in your home country or other eligible country.*

*Exceptions will be considered where no institute of higher education exists offering the degrees required for eligibility to this Programme as per the World Higher Education Database.

Purpose of the position

The position is expected to contribute to the strengthening of the capacity of the Strategic Information and Analytics Unit in the Department of Neglected Tropical Diseases, as well as in endemic countries, in monitoring, analyzing and reporting on the progress against the set NTD goals and milestones set in the neglected tropical diseases road map (2021-2030). The position is expected to strengthen data-driven decisions and policies of WHO and in endemic countries against the prevalent neglected tropical diseases.

Objectives of the Programme

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of mainly communicable diseases that prevail in tropical and subtropical countries and affect more than one billion people, costing developing economies billions of US dollars every year. They mainly affect impoverished populations living without adequate sanitation and in close contact with infectious vectors, domestic animals and livestock. The overall objective is for their eradication, elimination or control as set in the current road map for 2021-2030- Ending the Neglect to Attain Sustainable Developmental Goals.

Organizational context

The position is based in the Unit of Strategic Information and Analytics (SAI), Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), Division of Universal Health Coverage/ Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases (UCN). Under the guidance and supervision of the Unit Head, SAI, and in collaboration with technical staff in NTD and other relevant departments, the technical officer is required to contribute to the collection and analysis of data, and the creation of analytic reports to help monitor and take strategic and evidence-based decisions for the effective implementation of the 10-year road map on NTDs (2021-2030). The incumbent will need to develop skills on use of DHIS2 and other applications in routine Health Information Systems at the country level and in WHO, as well as on spatial analysis and effective dissemination of technical information.

Summary of Assigned Duties

  • To assist in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the NTD monitoring and evaluation systems;
  • To analyze, and utilize, the generated information in identifying gaps and improving implementation of NTD services and their reporting;
  • To contribute to the training of officers responsible for national health information systems in monitoring and evaluation of NTD services.

Education Qualifications

Essential

An advanced university degree in medicine, public health, health sciences, epidemiology, bio-statistics or other related field. A university degree in a relevant subject must have been obtained in your home country or other eligible country.

Desirable

Knowledge of tropical or infectious diseases.

Knowledge of the use of Excel, DHIS2 or other health information software.

Experience

Essential

At least two years of experience working in public health programmes at national or sub-national level.

Desirable

Experience in projects related to communicable or neglected tropical diseases. Experience in facilitating trainings for end-users. Experience in using routine Health Information Systems.

Use of Language Skills

Essential

Expert knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of French or expert knowledge of French and intermediate knowledge of English.

Desirable

Intermediate knowledge of Spanish. Basic knowledge of Arabic.
