The Young Professionals Programme

WHO Headquarters offers opportunities for young professionals from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to engage in WHO’s work and build skills and competence in key public health areas. This is a structured programme which incorporates additional exposure and experience at country level and career support.

Young Professionals will be assigned to regular WHO positions and will be fully immersed in WHO’s technical work. Young Professionals will benefit from career support, networking, mentoring and tailored learning opportunities throughout this period to support them in achieving their personal career goals. To enhance their knowledge and widen their professional network, the YPP may be posted in a different WHO office on short-term learning assignments.

Eligibility criteria

The following eligibility criteria in addition to the minimum requirements of the position will be used to shortlist candidates:

  • To be no older than 35 years on 31 December of the year of application.
  • To be a national of a country eligible for the Programme: List of Eligible Countries.
  • To hold a relevant university degree obtained in your home country or other eligible country.*

*Exceptions will be considered where no institute of higher education exists offering the degrees required for eligibility to this Programme as per the World Higher Education Database.

Purpose of the Position

The purpose of this position is to support the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases on its work on eradication of yaws and integrated control of other skin NTDs in achieving the NTD Road map 2030 targets. The Technical Officer contributes to the development of strategic plans, implementation and monitoring of guidelines and policies, support the development of action plans and surveillance systems for the eradication of yaws and control of other skin NTDs.

Objectives of the Programme

As part of WHO’s Division of Universal Health Coverage/Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases (UCN), the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) works in collaboration with other relevant WHO departments, national programmes of Member States and global partners, stakeholders, foundations and academia to:

  • reduce the devastating impact of neglected tropical diseases on the health and social and economic wellbeing of all people world-wide, contributing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Specific objectives include: Reduce mortality, morbidity and disability through the prevention, control and where applicable, elimination and eradication of selected neglected tropical diseases; Formulate evidence-based strategies that encompass preventive chemotherapy, case management, vector control, veterinary public health and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and facilitate their implementation using, where possible, a synergic approach; Advocate for increased visibility of neglected tropical diseases; mobilize, coordinate and leverage partners’ contribution; provide technical support to Member States, as well as WHO Regional and Country Offices; lead the processes for acknowledging the achievement of programmatic goals and targets; manage donation of medicines and medical supplies; be a repository for technical leadership and expertise and facilitate capacity strengthening and transfer of knowledge.

Organizational context

The incumbent works under the broad supervision of the Unit Head of Prevention, Treatment and Care and under the direction of the Team Leader for Skin NTDs, Disability Management and Inclusion. In collaboration with other technical staff at HQ and in other regional and country offices, the Technical Officer will contribute to develop/implement activities on yaws eradication and integrated control of skin NTDs in areas surveillance and training.

Summary of Assigned Duties

  • Provide technical assistance to the development of yaws eradication strategies, plans, tools in the context of the integrated control of skin NTDs framework;
  • Contribute to the development of national strategies and policies on yaws and integrated control of other skin NTDs
  • Compile, analyse and generate reports on data from countries on yaws eradication and other skin NTDs
  • Support the establishment or improvement of innovative surveillance or information systems on Yaws and related skin NTDs and the monitoring of progress towards eradication facilitating integration with the national health information systems.
  • Contribute to monitoring the distribution of diagnostics and medicines supplies to countries..
  • Carry out any relevant assigned duties.

  • Good drafting, proposal and report writing, communication skills.

Education Qualifications

Essential

An advanced university degree in medicine, public health, epidemiology or related health sciences field and a first university degree in a related area. A university degree in a relevant subject must have been obtained in your home country or other eligible country.

Desirable

Advanced training in epidemiology, disease surveillance, tropical medicine or health field.

Experience

Essential

At least two years of professional experience in communicable or neglected tropical diseases focusing on the areas of disease surveillance and control. Experience to write proposals, study protocols or carry out literature reviews and research results in tropical diseases or other communicable diseases Experience working at the country level in disease prevention or surveillance control programme,

Desirable

Good knowledge and skills in Neglected Tropical Diseases especially in the area of Skin-NTDs (such as Buruli ulcer, Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Leprosy, Yaws and fungal diseases). Ability to write proposals, study protocols, carry out literature reviews and research results in tropical diseases or other communicable diseases. Experience in developing strategies and action plans for implementing disease prevention programmes.

Use of Language Skills

Essential

Intermediate knowledge of English.

Desirable

Intermediate knowledge of French or another WHO official language.
