UNFPA Young Innovators Fellowship Programme 2022

Enabling young people to realise their full social, economic and human potential is a key aspect of UNFPA’s mandate. Our Fellows are innovative young people from around the world who have demonstrated commitment to development issues within their communities. The Young Innovators Fellowship programme brings young people into UNFPA with a dedicated focus on both providing a youth perspective and driving innovation. This exciting opportunity sees fellows undergo leadership training and support innovation efforts in UNFPA Regional or Country Offices in a capacity relevant to their experience. Our goal is to provide fellows with the tools, skill sets, international experience and exposure to innovation to empower them to realise their career goals, thus building national capacity. Fellows in turn provide innovative insights and ideas that will enable us to be better aligned with development issues in their community.

The UNFPA Young Innovator Fellow will contribute to UNFPA’s innovation priorities in a number of ways, including: strengthening the innovation architecture; supporting the scale-up of innovations; forming partnerships; strengthening financing for innovation; and expanding the communities and culture for innovation.

Ghana’s private sector remains untapped for resource mobilisation. As a means to accelerate the achievement of UNFPA’s transformative results, there is an urgent need to bring on board new and emerging donors. UNFPA is seeking candidates that transform, inspire and deliver high impact and sustained results. We need Fellows who are exceptional in how they will bring innovative solutions to identify opportunities to mobilise resources in support of the Country Programme.

 The UNFPA Young Innovator Fellow will work with the Communications, Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Unit in collaboration with other programme Units in the office. 

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Country Representative, the Fellow will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Research, map, collect and analyze documents/information on topics of regional/country specific interest, and UNFPA mandate, including contributing to the development of:

● Programme-specific analytical briefs, Briefing Notes and Notes to File (NTF) ● The innovation lab for programming

  1. Develop an application that will aid to alert the Country Office on available opportunities for resource mobilisation in relation to UNFPA’s mandate.

  2. Support the preparation and review of concept/proposals for mobilising additional resources for the CO.

  3. Identify other innovative, practicable and alternative means to mobilizing resources aside from the traditional ways.

  4. Produce a report on the resource mobilization landscape of the country office with practical recommendations on how to maintain engagement with key donors at the end of the fellowship.

  5. Collaborate with internal CO, RO colleagues to contribute to the development of strategies, approaches, policies and the planning of resource mobilization initiatives in support of programmes/projects implementation and delivery of results, including in humanitarian response.

  6. Assist in monitoring and assessing the results and impacts of partnerships, advocacy for resource mobilization and communication efforts, and ensure timely reporting and documentation of results.

  7. Actively contribute to ensure timely preparation and dissemination of mandatory and special reports (donors, programme/projects), as well as briefing papers and corporate publications regarding programme activities in support of the UNFPA mission in the country.

  8. Contribute to the communication, advocacy and visibility work of the CO.

  9. Carry out any other duties as may be required by UNFPA leadership.

The assignment will include mission travel to New York, once for a capstone to conclude the fellowship.

The cost of living in Accra, Ghana, is relatively higher compared to other countries in the sub-region, mainly as a result of the volatility of the local currency against the US dollar.

The incumbent will reside in the capital city of Accra, Ghana. Ghana is currently classified as hardship category A. This confirms that transport, medical, education and other services are at a high level compared to other countries in the region. At sea level, the climate of the country is tropical hot and humid with average yearly temperatures of about 27C (80F) and little daily variation. At the interior's higher altitudes, the average yearly temperature is 20C (68F), and nights are generally cool. Annual rainfall varies from 500 centimeters (200 in.) on the southwestern slopes to 100 centimeters (40 in.) in the northern lowlands. The rainy season runs from October to May. Ghana is a Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) country and a family duty station.

The total population of Ghana is about 30.8 million with 50.7 percent of the population being females. The population under 15 years (children) is 35.3 percent, 15-64 (working aged) is 60.4 percent and the aged 65 years and over represent 4.3 percent of the population. The population residing in the urban areas is 56.6 percent an increase from 2010 of 50.9 percent. Currently the country is youthful with 73.4 percent of the population aged 0-35 years.
