This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

The volunteer will be working with the Chief of Communications and the World Urban Forum Coordinator, External Relations Knowledge and Innovation Division.

Under the direct supervision of, Chief of Communications UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Outreach and communication for visibility and awareness • Support the Chief of Communications on conducting communication and media analysis to ensure the development of a successful WUF communications strategy. • Support the Chief of Communications with different tasks related to WUF communication and visibility efforts, including: o Development of media and visibility strategies: including main press releases, geographical media coverage, digital platforms, and media patrons. o Ensuring international and local media coverage. o The implementation of the pre and post WUF dissemination plan (to be prepared by the communications team at UN-Habitat), including the wide dissemination of all relevant material and report, the drafting and finalization of content for the news stories, media advisories, and press releases (in Arabic and English and other UN official languages when needed), and other relevant communication content for the WUF as per the communications plan, in the lead-up to, during and after the WUF. o Produce and disseminate social media and website content including but not limited to graphics, text captions, videos, infographics, and images to maximize engagement and promote brand awareness. • Support the Chief of Communications in engagement of an implementing partner to develop the WUF12 media campaign as per the WUF12 communications strategy; including its preparatory and selection phase, inception, development, and deployment phases. Strategic planning and preparation: • Support the WUF coordinator in the follow-up and implementation of activities according to the WUF12 communications strategy and the WUF12 action plan. • Support the WUF coordinator in the development and preparation of the communications products in relation to the WUF12 main theme, background paper, and concept note, along with the provisional and final programmes, and reports relating to WUF12, including, in particular, reports of events and summaries of discussions. • Provide support to the WUF coordinator when needed, on: o the drafting of speeches and event scripts for key speakers, including the event moderators. o the preparation of the speakers, PowerPoint presentations, and other presentation materials ensuring they align with the event’s visual identity, in close collaboration with UN-Habitat’s Chief of Communications.

Results/Expected Outputs • Regular outreach, communications, and management-related work in preparation for WUF12 ensuring an effective implementation of the WUF12 communications strategy and media campaign.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
