Overview

Deliver high-quality editorial content promoting UNEP’s core messages.

You have:

  • A master’s degree in journalism, communication, social sciences or other related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master’s degree.
  • At least 10 years of experience in writing, journalism, or communication, with proven editorial skills is required.
  • Strong research, writing, editing, and communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences is required.
  • Experience working with the UN or other international organizations is desirable.
  • Familiarity with climate change, environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and pollution issues is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the global authority leading environmental policy. UNEP sets the global environmental agenda, coordinates sustainable development efforts within the UN system, and serves as an advocate for the environment worldwide. UNEP’s Communications Division plays a vital role in disseminating key messages, promoting environmental awareness, and raising UNEP’s global profile. The consultant will contribute to a wide range of communication materials and ensure UNEP's editorial output supports the environmental discourse effectively. Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Chief of Content and in close collaboration with the UNEP Lead Editor, the consultant will undertake the following responsibilities: 1. Consultation and Research: Conduct consultation meetings with UNEP programme staff to better understand the organization’s work and communication needs. Identify, research, and develop story ideas by conducting interviews and reviewing relevant materials. 2. Content Creation: Write engaging and informative stories for UNEP’s website, digital platforms, and other communications materials, aligning with UNEP’s editorial guidelines and tone. Develop accompanying visuals (photos, infographics, videos) in collaboration with the Multimedia team where necessary. 3. Editorial Duties: Ensure all written content is fact-checked and adheres to UNEP’s editorial standards, guidelines, and political sensitivities. 4. Reporting and Feedback: Submit drafts, live feed updates, and edited content within agreed-upon timelines and editorial plans. Participate in regular editorial meetings, providing input on the planning of upcoming stories and campaigns.
