Overview

Deliver high-quality editorial content on climate action to promote environmental issues.

You have:

  • A master’s degree in journalism, communication, social sciences or other related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master’s degree.
  • Minimum of five years of extensive experience in story writing, journalism and including strong editorial skills is required in English or a minimum of five years of extensive professional experience with a master’s degree is required.
  • Proven editorial skills, including research, writing, substantive editing, copy-editing and proofreading, oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Writer must have minimum of 2 years experience writing on climate change.
  • Experience working with the UN System, preferably in a similar assignment, is desirable.
  • Good understanding of climate issues is desirable.
  • Experience working in and writing on climate change issues in the global South is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. It sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Communication Division disseminates UNEP's core messages to stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing UNEP’s profile worldwide. Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief of Content, and in close collaboration with UNEP’s Climate Action Pillar lead, the Consultant Writer/Editor will contribute to UNEP’s 2025 communication priorities with a focus on climate action. Key responsibilities include: • Develop compelling content on climate change topics—including climate finance, transparency, adaptation and mitigation, Champions of the Earth project and the interlinkages with biodiversity loss, land degradation, and pollution. • Edit and refine content for UNEP’s website, including refreshed topic pages, technical highlights, news stories, and other web formats. • Support delivery of communications for the seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), including real-time web updates and coverage of flagship climate initiatives. • Conduct research and interviews to generate accurate, politically attuned stories aligned with UNEP’s editorial guidelines. • Participate in consultations with programme and communications staff to ensure alignment with UNEP’s climate action portfolio and communication strategies. • Review relevant literature such as reports, success stories, and communications outputs to inform content development.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required.
