Title: Work-based Learning Consultant Title of project: Expanding Access to Internships and Work-Based Learning for Refugee Students in Higher Education in Ethiopia and Kenya Duty station: Home-based Section/Unit: Sustainable Responses Service, Education Duration: 4 months (full-time)
DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ENGAGED INDIVIDUAL CONSULTANT
General Background of Project or Assignment, Operational Context: The transition from higher education to employment is a critical stage in developing a skilled, inclusive workforce, particularly for young refugees facing legal and socio-economic barriers. Structured work-based learning (WBL) is increasingly recognized as essential for improving graduate employability and easing the school-to-work transition.
Despite global consensus and policy momentum around WBL, refugee students face persistent barriers such as legal restrictions, lack of formalized partnerships between universities and employers, and absence of structured national frameworks. This study will explore individual-level access to internships, as well as systemic, institutional, and policy-level structures that shape WBL opportunities in Ethiopia and Kenya.
