The UNODC Programme Office in Indonesia (POIDN) works with the Government of Indonesia (GoI), civil society stakeholders, and donor partners to support the development of strategies and measures to enhance the justice system’s response to challenges including wildlife crime. Under its Criminal Justice Program, UNODC intends to provide technical assistance to the GoI to evaluate threats from wildlife crime and build the capacity of relevant institutions and personnel to prevent wildlife crime and improve rehabilitation and reintegration programs for wildlife crime offenders.

As part of the Global Programme for Combating Wildlife and Forest Crime (GP WLFC), the UNODC’s Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB) is conducting research on wildlife crime and providing the evidence base to support countries in better tackling this important issue. The research proposed below would support Indonesia’s current successful efforts to prevent wildlife trafficking by: (I) providing a detailed understanding of wildlife crime offenders’ modus operandi and motivations for engaging in wildlife poaching and trafficking; (II) (II) helping target law enforcement efforts for maximum effect to those offenders most likely to be deterred by them; this requires knowing what works and for whom; (III) (III) identifying possible wildlife crime prevention techniques where communities can support formal wildlife law enforcement efforts by policing and deterring each other.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Wildlife Crime Research Coordinator - Indonesia or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Wildlife Crime Research Assistant will:

• Assist in the wildlife crime coordinator with the semi-structured interviews of offenders convicted of wildlife crimes in Indonesian prisons. • Support the wildlife crime research coordinator in working with the regional office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the head of the Correctional Facilities to facilitate this research. • Conduct travel and field activities in various provinces and cities with high mobility, visiting correctional facilities and in remote locations with communication access that may be limited. • Support the preparation of logistics and equipment prior to offender interviews. • Making written record the of interviews in an accurate and structured manner, documenting, in-putting and managing interview results using excel software. • Assisting basic content analysis of the interviews and providing short outputs on results to be used by the wildlife crime research coordinator and the wildlife crime research officer. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

• conducting research, including basic data entry and analysis required. • Experience in qualitative research with interviews desirable. • Knowledge of wildlife poaching and trafficking (any species), including modus desirable. • The research to be undertaken will require skills in conducting interviews, therefore, candidates with knowledge of qualitative research methodologies and interviewing techniques background are preferred, and to have the ability to observe interviews and support the flow of the interview when necessary. • Strong organizational skills required. • Willingness/ability to work in remote locations required. • Able to do activities in remote areas and experienced in organizing field work activities. • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;

Language skills required: Fluency in spoken and written Bahasa Indonesia is required; Fluency in Acehnesse is required;

The position is located in Indonesia with expected outcome and results of the position as below: • As an active UNODC-Indonesia team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNODC-Indonesia and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: o Build and maintain good communication and relationships with relevant agencies in research. o Interviews with all target respondents were carried out in accordance with the data collection’s protocol. o Obtaining data, managed and stored the written data properly, uploading the data to a cloud drive. • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

DISERABLES: Fluency in English is desirable •valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain; • Sound security awareness; • Knowledge and experience in the field of natural resource conservation, wildlife conservation and Indonesia’s biodiversity conservation regulation will be preferred.

Also, Dependent on continuation of mandate, availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance; there is no guarantee of assignment extension.
