We are seeking to fill the position of a Fixed Term position of Nurse G5, based in the Medical Service Unit in the Staff Wellness Division (WEL) Division of our Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Candidates must be residents of Italy and have a legal work permit there. In addition, candidates must reside within commuting distance to the location of the office in the duty station Rome, Italy ( Via Cesare Giulio Viola, 68/70, 00148 Roma, Italy) at the time of application.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. The Staff Wellness Division (WEL) is located in the Workplace Culture Department and supports WFP by striving to build a successful workplace health programme through integrating occupational safety and health protection with psychological and health promotion to prevent employee injury and illness, and to advance the health, wellbeing, morale and performance of WFP employees. Within WEL the Medical Service is an Occupational Health unit, responsible for providing healthcare support services for WFP employees, such as medical clearances (new appointments and reassignments) and travel clearances including vaccinations.

JOB PURPOSE

Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer and the direct supervision of the Head Nurse, the Nurse will be required to provide a wide selection of nursing services to staff members including triage and treatment of patients with acute medical complaints, briefing staff members travelling or transferring outside of Headquarters and providing information and guidance on local medical facilities. More specifically, the incumbent will have the following responsibilities :

  • implement comprehensive pro-active occupational health and safety strategy to prevent occupational injuries and diseases
  • collaborate in team with the Medical Officer for the promotion of health and work ability, through a comprehensive workplace health promotion strategy, by focusing on non-occupational, workplace preventable conditions that, whilst not caused directly by work, may affect the employee’s ability to maintain attendance or performance at work
  • improve environmental health management, by reducing risk to the working population and the wider community according to the Staff Wellness strategy
  • contribute to the wider public health agenda.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive)

  1. Provide the appropriate nursing interventions in the Medical Service for employees / visitors in case of emergency or urgent medical problems;
  2. Provide the appropriate ongoing nursing interventions in the Medical Service for employees with service incurred injuries;
  3. Under the guidance of the Medical Officer, arrange referrals to outside specialists and hospitals;
  4. Perform medical tests (e.g. electrocardiograms);
  5. Give intramuscular, subcutaneous and/or intradermal injections to staff, as prescribed by own physicians or by the Medical Officer;
  6. Brief and prepare employees for Official Duty Travel deployment with appropriate medical advice including vaccinations;
  7. Promote and provide preventive medical services to staff members (mammograms, explain VCCT for HIV testing, etc);
  8. Maintain medical records, using the corporate digital database, as required, respond to basic medical-related queries by phone and email;
  9. Perform expert skills using electronic medical data base including data analysis;
  10. Assist the Medical Officer and the Health Advisor in developing medical procedures to be implemented in case of pandemic and emerging infectious diseases both at HQ and Field level;
  11. Deliver training programs and occupational health activities ;
  12. Collect and produce public health information on Pandemic Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases (e.g. Covid 19 coronavirus/Influenza etc.);
  13. Perform other related duties as required, coordinating and collaborating with Medical Service staff in HQ and in the different RBs (Regional Bureaus);
  14. Work with accuracy under time constraints and pressure.

SPECIFIC POST REQUIREMENTS (As required by the Hiring Manager)

Essential:

  • Valid nursing license registration in any of the UN Member States
  • At least five years of experience in practical nursing care, including outpatient care.
  • Ability to conduct medical/health trainings to non-medical personnel

Desirable:

  • Valid life support certificates at provider/instructor level: ALS; ACLS; ATLS; PHTLS; PTC; BLS; BLS-D
  • Previous work experience in UN occupational health and safety setting
  • Previous clinical nursing experience in hospital settings

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Registered Nurse license.

Language: Working knowledge (proficiency/FAO level C) of English. Knowledge of Italian is an asset.

Experience: Five years’ experience in practical nursing care, including outpatient care (including at least one year at G4 level or equivalent for internal candidates)

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proficiency in MS Office and other computer software packages
  • Knowledge of work routines, methods
  • Uses tact, courtesy and empathetic attitude towards customers
  • Ability to offer guidance to the employees who need support in occupational health queries related
