Mali is a non-family duy station. Gao is in a strategic location in north-eastern Mali bordering Burkina Faso and Niger, and the Gao region is key to the overall stability in the Sahel region. The region is a vital crossroads for the movement of goods and people across the Sahel, as well as an important economic centre. Gao is a non-family duty station with a difficult security and working environment. Living conditions are acceptable in Gao, but security instructions need to be strictly complied with. Accommodations are provided by the UN within an integrated camp, at the monthly cost of around 100$ for UN Volunteers. The national currency is the Franc CFA. Visa credit cards are accepted in some hotels and larger shops in Bamako and in Banks in Gao. The Gao Integrated Camp contains medical facilities including a Clinic and a Level 2 Hospital. Basic medicines are available from pharmacies and the UN Clinic. The integrated camp contains various staff welfare facilities including a few shops, several cafeterias and bars, a gymnasium, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts and other recreational spaces.

Security recommendations from the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) must be followed by all UN personnel in the course of their assignments in Mali.

For a rewarding experience, UN Volunteers in MINUSMA carry out their duties with flexibility, commitment, and a willingness to live and work in challenging conditions including heat and limited water and electricity supply.
