This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of MINUSMA Welfare Unit, the UN Volunteer’s main responsibilities will be in the area of welfare, recreation management and development. He/she will undertake the following tasks:

  • Assist in developing programmes designed to improve the quality of life of staff members within the mission area;
  • Assist in monitoring environmental factors that could lead to unhealthy lifestyles;
  • Increase staff awareness and information about social and recreational opportunities available in the mission by contributing to the induction training of new staff, producing a guide to local amenities, regularly updating information posted on the intranet, facilitating access to housing information, and developing links with local resources as appropriate;
  • Improve the recreational and social opportunities of staff by convening staff welfare and recreation committees;
  • Assist in developing regular recreational activities for staff (such as outings, film nights and other social events) and working in partnership with administration to secure standard welfare facilities (gym, restaurant, PX, laundry services, banking facilities, mediation room, common recreation areas etc.);
  • Establish an information resource center and organize a book/DVD library for staff;
  • Facilitate increased welfare initiatives in his/her designated duty station by supporting welfare and recreation committees and fostering the development of new sub-committees;
  • Review monthly financial reports of welfare and recreation committee;
  • Participate in developing the expertise, profile, and capacity of the Welfare Unit by identifying funding opportunities;
  • Assist in assessing welfare and recreation requirements within the mission and act as a focal point for welfare initiatives within his/her designated duty station;
  • Organize memorial services for international civilian staff in the event of death and act as focal point/resource person for the family of the deceased staff member;
  • Participate in monthly meetings led by Chief, Welfare Unit in which all Welfare Officers participate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Welfare Unit.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Business, Management, Sociology, Social Work, Planning, Social Science, Project Management.

Required experience:

36 Months

Experience remark:

Sound knowledge of Social Events organization; Basic Knowledge of Psychology and stress management.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • French(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Area of expertise:

Social work, Hospitality, Other development programme/project experience

Area of expertise details:

Computer skills (Word, Excel, social media...); Social Events organization; Basic Knowledge of Psychology and stress management.
