Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. Together with governments, the agency is responsible for promoting and consolidating collaboration with all partners, including local authorities, and private and non-governmental organizations in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UN-Habitat leads the Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), which helps water and sanitation operators help one another. GWOPA is an international network created in 2009 to support operators through Water Operator’s Partnerships (WOPs) – not-for-profit peer support partnerships between water and sanitation operators aimed at enhancing their capacity and performance to provide a better service to more people in support of the SDGs. The GWOPA Secretariat is currently hosted by the Government of Germany.

Under the overall supervision of the Officer in Charge of GWOPA, the guidance of the GWOPA Communications Consultant, and in close collaboration with the Web Development and Visual Design Consultants, the incumbent will launch produced visual content on GWOPA’s website.

To maximize impact, the consultant may have to modify or create the templates currently used on the website and ensure overall harmony and functionality. The consultant is expected to advise on good and common practices on visual communication and content management to maximize impact of activities and provide solutions for the optimization of the CMS to facilitate updating by non-technical staff; The consultant will also migrate all the files from the current United Nations Office Nairobi (UNON) server to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and thus support the revamp of the design of the GWOPA website. The consultant will, as such, undertake the following main tasks: Development and hosting of GWOPA web content

  • Migration of the content of the GWOPA’s website from the current temporary (UNON) server to the final (AWS) server.
  • Rebuild the website according to the requirements and specifications of a new CMS platform that best suits the needs of the GWOPA communications team and the existing content on the AWS server.
  • Implement a new template design provided by the GWOPA’s web designer following the visual guidelines.
  • In collaboration with the GWOPA Knowledge Management and Database Consultants, ensure a seamless flow between the revised GWOPA database and the GWOPA website, including data provided by GWOPA Regional Platforms and Members and ensuring its proper placement and promotion.
  • Migrate the content from the separately hosted 4th Global WOPS Congress virtual venue to the new GWOPA website.
  • Integrate an online congress platform into the 5th Global WOPs Congress website and maintain for the period of the GWOPA Congress in May 2023. Handle both back end and front-end issues as requested.
  • Manage bug tracking systems in a timely manner.

    Qualifications/special skills Experience:

  • A minimum of three years of working experience is required in developing and managing websites with content management tools (WordPress, Drupal and/or Joomla).
  • Experience with UN projects is desirable.
  • Practical experience in the latest versions of the following: HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, TypeScript or modern JavaScript, PHP and MySQL
  • Practical experience with responsive web design techniques.

    Languages Fluency is English required. Knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
