Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Communications Division communicates UNEP’s core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.

The website editor will focus on the quality control for unep.org, related websites and other digital products.

Under the supervision of the Chief of Digital Strategy working in close consultation with the Head Writer, the consultant will perform the following duties:

  • Liaise with UNEP’s Communication Division, communicators outside the Division, and web focal points to identify and correct outdated and/or inappropropriate web content.
  • Ensure that web copy for UNEP and related websites accurately reflect UNEP’s policy positions, advocacy goals, and broader UN messaging.
  • Follow the news agenda on the triple planetary crisis and ensure UNEP’s digital products are relevant.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that timely, compelling, relevant and well-researched content is easily findable across the UNEP website and featured in internal and external facing newsletters.
  • Conduct thorough research on assigned topics to ensure accuracy and provide credible sources for reference.
  • Write clear, concise, and SEO-friendly content that incorporates relevant keywords and follows UNEP brand guidelines.
  • Collaborate with peers in the content and digital sections to develop content strategies and ensure consistency in messaging across various online platforms.
  • Edit and proofread content to ensure high-quality standards, including grammar, spelling, punctuation and agreed website style.
  • Optimize content for search engines, including meta tags, headers, and formatting, to improve organic search rankings in various online platforms.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in usability, web writing, content marketing, and SEO and apply when appropriate.
  • Assist in content planning and brainstorming sessions to generate new ideas and topics.
  • Collaborate with designers and developers to ensure the visual and functional integration of written content is efficient and effective.
  • Monitor and analyze website metrics and user engagement to identify areas for improvement and suggest content optimization strategies.

    Qualifications/special skills A master’s degree in journalism, communication, international relations, social sciences or other related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master’s degree.” Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in journalism, publishing, public information, communication, information studies, or related field is required. Demonstrated experience editing content for web sites. Knowledge of environmental issues is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required; knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
