Organizational Setting

The key mission of the FAO Representation in Somalia, which is led by FAO Representative (FAOR), is to assist and support the national government to develop policies, strategies and programme aimed at accelerating the Implementation and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in FAO's global mandate and Strategic Objectives. More specifically, FAO's response aims to address national needs and priorities in achieving food security, reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing agricultural, fishery and forestry sectors, and ensuring the sustainable use of environmental and natural resources and respond to recurrent emergencies. The current portfolio of activities of the FAO Representation in Somalia includes a wide scope of technical support interventions ranging from policy support through livestock and crop production, to natural resource management, Nutrition, value chain, food security analysis and water and land information management. FAO is also implementing several emergency, resilience-building, and development interventions, with the support of its five field offices and close to 400 staff in partnership with the Federal and State line ministries.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative for Somalia, the general guidance of SWALIM Technical Advisor, and the direct supervision of the Senior Hydrologist.

Technical Focus

The incumbent will be responsible for installation, operation and maintenance of hydrometeorological and groundwater monitoring stations, water resources data collection and quality control, and updating of online system.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Responsible for the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of groundwater and weather monitoring networks including Automatic Weather Station (AWS), and divers. • Carry out scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on data collection hardware and software systems such as those for the telemetric stations. • Responsible for continuous quality checks on all water resources data coming from the field surveys and telemetric monitoring stations. • Support and contribute to SWALIM water theme activities in including studies and surveys, data and information analysis, development of data collection tools, training of ministry and partner staff on the use of the data, information and tools. • Support routine water quality testing activities and ensure water quality data is incorporated into the SWIMS and Live map database. • Support the Liaison Office Manager with daily water information management related tasks including managing the Somali Water Sources Information Management System (SWIMS), the Climate Database, Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), etc. • Support the design, planning and organization of information and knowledge management products including SWALIM reports and bulletins. • Promote and increase the use of SWALIM water resources information and databases. • Carryout client visits, address their water resources information needs, support and assist clients on the use of the water resources information. Monitor, evaluate and obtain regular feedback on usage of SWALIM water information products. • Participate in the regional Water, Sanitation and, Hygiene (WASH) coordination meetings and present SWALIM related databases, act as SWALIM focal point for WASH cluster meetings. • Perform any other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in geology, hydrology & water management, or related field from a recognized university /institution. • At least three years of work experience in hydrology and water resources management. • Working Knowledge (Level C) Of English and Somali. • National of Somalia.
