In Haiti, 26 percent of the population do not have access to improved water sources (41 percent in rural areas and 5 percent in urban areas).

Only 25 percent of households have access to an adequate facility to wash their hands with soap.

25 percent of households practice open defecation (36 percent in rural areas and 10 percent in urban areas).

7 out of 10 people do not have access to an improved sanitation system.

To remedy this, UNICEF, through its 2016-2030 WASH strategy plan, will promote: 1) the establishment of operational plans adapted to children; 2) the improvement of WASH coverage; 3) the fight against open defecation; 4) strengthening water treatment systems.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Chief of WASH, the WASH Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and reporting on the programme progress on the enabling environment and WASH in institutions components. S/he provides technical and management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable results according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology, organizational Strategic Plans and goals, standards of performance, and accountability framework

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• An advanced university degree (Master’s) in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas: Public Health, Sanitation Engineering, Health Education or Communication for Development (C4D) or a field relevant to international WASH related development assistance.
• At least five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the UN or other international development organization, national government or the private sector.

- Field work experience in WASH related projects is a strong asset

- Background/familiarity with Emergency (preparedness and response) and the IASC Cluster approach.

Required technical knowledge :

• Advanced knowledge of one or more of the technical areas of UNICEF programmes.
• Advanced Technical Knowledge of the theories, principles and methods in the following areas: communication for behavior change, WASH in schools, water supply projects management, monitoring and evaluation; integrated water resource management appropriate water supply and quality technology i.e. community based water supply.
• Knowledge of the latest theories, technology and practices in: WASH in Schools and healthcare facilities, WASHFit, Community-based approaches

Language

• Fluency in French and local working language of the Duty Station is required. Good working knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
