Salary

The salary for this job should be between 171,387 USD and 220,969 USD.

UNICEF’s WASH Section works towards Goal Area 4 in the new Strategic Plan 2018-2021: “Every child lives in a safe and clean environment” and aims to achieve two specific WASH-related outcomes: countries have implemented programmes to increase equitable access to safe ​and sustainable drinking water services in communities; and countries have implemented programmes to increase equitable access to sanitation and hygiene and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations. These two outcomes mirror closely the SDG targets 6.1 and 6.2. Achieving results in these areas will allow us to contribute to the broader Sustainable Development Goals Agenda, in particular nutrition (SDG2), health (SDG3) and education (SDG4).

For every child, clean water….

You will support the development, provides technical guidance and management support to facilitate the achievement of the WASH-related output results in the strategic plan. You will also work with information from regional and country offices of UNICEF, cross-sectoral partners within UNICEF (such as ADAP, Gender, UNGEI, Education and Nutrition) as well as external partners including NGOs and academia working on hygiene, and market based approaches and contributes to the capacity development of UNICEF field staff.

How can you make a difference?

Lead oversight and engagement of the global private sector initiatives in hygiene and sanitation

• Under the supervision of the Sanitation and Hygiene Senior Advisor, provide technical support in development of six country programmes as part of Phase II of the Lixil partnership
• Provide ongoing support to monitoring and reporting on the partnership and regular communications with program countries and regional offices
• Support development of communications materials (i.e. videos, briefs, etc.)
• Support ideation processes and cross-learning opportunities across regions.
• Provide regular coordination and liaison with Lixil and PFP on this initiative

Support capacity, coordination and leadership of global hygiene initiatives

• Support the senior adviser on developing a capacity building strategy for the hygiene component of the strategic plan.
• Support senior advisor in managing the Global Handwashing Partnership
• Develop research agenda on cross cutting areas such as WASH Nutrition, NTDs and other emerging areas of interest
• Draft briefing notes, policy papers and proposals for use by management, donors, UNICEF regional and country offices and headquarters.
• Liaise and support with the HH4A initiative as needed.
• Engage in market-based programming based partnerships such as the WEF Hand Hygiene Market Accelerator and the Duke accelerator
• Build capacity for menstrual health and hygiene programming in partnership with country offices, regional offices, UNGEI, ADAP, Education and Gender, and external academic partners.
• Support on-going research on menstrual health and hygiene through high quality inputs to global research initiatives
• Support global role for UNICEF in the Global Menstrual Health Collective.
• Support private sector engagement in market-based approaches to MHH
• Support the planning, organizing and content development of the Annual MHM in Schools Virtual Conference and MHM in Ten.

Support reporting and resources mobilization efforts within the Sanitation and Hygiene team

• Under the guidance of the Senior Advisor Sanitation and Hygiene, provide support to development of new proposals and new partnerships
• Preparation of partnership briefing notes, PowerPoints as needed
• Support for reporting and monitoring on donor-funded initiatives.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in public health, public health, education, environmental health, social sciences and engineering (or equivalent experience in specific programming area and/or in relevant field is required.
• A minimum of eight (8) years of solid professional work experience at the national and/or international levels in WASH development and emergency programming in developing countries.
• At least one year focused specifically in the area of private sector engagement, sanitation, Menstrual Hygiene of hygiene behavior change programming.
• Experience in research and gender aspects of programming will be considered an asset.
• Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
