Position: WASH Officer

Reports to: Area Program Manager

Supervision of: Community hygiene promoters, contractors, casuals, and skilled / unskilled labours.

Duty station: Aweil

Travel: Daily monitoring visits to Emergency WASH response locations in Aweil East County.

  1. Roles and responsibilities

The purpose of the officer position is day to day implementation of the WASH Project in the targeted communities in Wau county. Use actions words such as ensure, implement, or assist for the position relevant responsibilities.

Generic responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence with NRC policies, tools, handbooks, and guidelines.
  • Prepare and develop status reports weekly and submit to APM/ Education Coordinator and WASH-PDM
  • Ensure proper filing of documents.
  • Promote and share ideas for technical improvement.
  • Contribute to organisational learning through the provision specific technical analysis, lessons learned and reports.
  • Ensure that projects meet target beneficiaries most in need, and explore and asses new and better ways to assist

Specific responsibilities

  1. Facilitate and identify the contaminated and suspected boreholes and open wells for cleaning and disinfection with consultation of local authorities and communities.
  2. Facilitate and identify the contaminated and damaged boreholes and open wells for rehabilitation with consultation of local authorities and communities.
  3. Coordinate and work with local authority and community to identify, select, verify, and register the households for Hygiene Kits and WASH-NFIs distribution in accordance with the NRC’s set criteria on beneficiary selection and identification.
  4. Select and train community hygiene promoters on ToT training on basic hygiene promotion messages together with local authorities and communities.
  5. Conduct WASH need assessments in the communities and institutions and collect all the needed information with accordance to the NRC requirements and guild lines.
  6. Draft full detailed assessment reports based on the findings and as delegated by the line manager.
  7. Coordinate with the logistic, Finance and Procurement teams to ensure that required WASH supplies and support services are ready timely as requested.
  8. Prepare WASH in Community detailed Work plan, Procurement plan and all other required documents before commencing the work.
  9. Engage with local authority, health ministry and water and sanitation department for all phases of WASH interventions from assessments, mobilization, and implementation, monitoring and handing over.
  10. Collect all feedback and comments from the community & share with management and ensure their feedback to be taken in to consideration.
  11. Having all the project documents well prepared with accordance to NRC requirements and as delegated by the line manager and to ensure proper archiving.
  12. Collect beneficiaries data using beneficiaries tracking sheet and update all data related to water provision (Water Point/Sources Rehabilitation and disinfection ) , water quality testing , distributions , hygiene promotion activities and trainings..
  13. Provide the inputs for monthly, quarterly, and final reports.
  14. Supervise contractor’s / casual work’s work and report on daily/weekly basis.
  15. Carry out activities in a way that reflects the needs of specific groups and individuals e.g. elderly people, minority groups, children, and people with disabilities.
  16. Prepare weekly report including progress, challenges and proposed action and share with Line manager and WASH-PDM.

  • Minimum first level university degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 2 -3 years of experience working in a humanitarian/recovery context and specific experience in WASH.

  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities.
  • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
  • Fluency in English and Arabic, both written and verbal

  • Ability to ride motor bike in muddy area/difficult terrain.
