In the Pacific we work in Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu: These 14 Pacific island countries are home to 2.3 million people, including 1.2 million children and youth, living on more than 660 islands and atolls stretching across 17.2 million square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean, an area comparable to the combined size of the United States of America and Canada. Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu are classified as Fragile States according to World Bank/OECD criteria.

How can you make a difference?

The WASH Officer provides professional technical, operational and administrative assistance throughout the WASH programming process, through the application of theoretical and practical technical skills in researching, collecting, analyzing and presenting programme information while learning organizational rules, regulations and procedures to support the development, implementation and monitoring of the WASH output results of the Country Programme. Specifically, this WASH officer will provide technical, operational, and administrative support in the development, implementation and monitoring to Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) programmes and will support the planning and implementation of the National Sustainable Sanitation Plan in the Solomon Islands.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • A university degree in one of the following fields is required: public health, social sciences, behavior change communication, sanitary engineering or another relevant technical field.

Experience:

  • At least one year experience with a proven record of accomplishment and exposure to WASH programmes in developing countries especially on Sanitation and Hygiene, community demand-led sanitation or community-led total sanitation (CLTS) approaches, hygiene behavior changes interventions, communication for development in WASH programming and cross-cutting areas including gender, disability and adolescents is required.
  • Experience working with government agencies, local authorities, international organizations, NGOs and communities in the field of water, sanitation and participatory approaches in health and hygiene promotion.
  • Experience with self-build approaches in infrastructure will be a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in monitoring & evaluating the effectiveness of the CLTS/DLS approach initiatives
  • A good understanding of national government WASH-related policies plans and strategies, and institutional arrangements is required.
  • Experience in implementation of “Market-based sanitation approaches that develop or strengthen the market and supply chain for sanitation products and services including documentation of knowledge & learning products and sharing results from this approach is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the latest guidance and best practices for WASH programming in the Pacific context especially WASH in healthcare facilities will be an asset

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a local language is an asset.
