UNICEF South Africa works to strengthen communication, advocacy and fundraising to achieve its programme priorities to improve the lives of the most disadvantaged children. This includes in the areas of education, health and nutrition, child protection and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). The volunteer programme was established in 2018 and engages young people across Universities in South Africa to support advocacy, fundraising and awareness raising activities in support of UNICEF’s work for the most vulnerable children. The goal is to directly engage in advocacy campaigns, promote child rights issues and raise awareness of the UNICEF brand in the country, while at the same time contributing to positive social and behavior change. UNICEF South Africa engages on integrated campaigns that bring together the power of our programme work with communication, advocacy, and fundraising for maximum impact in improving the lives of children and young people across the country. The volunteer programme and coordination work across sectors is key to ensuring the most effective response possible.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Communication and Partnerships, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Support in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing activities related to the volunteer programme, including the development and sign off on annual workplans and calendars for each Campus Club; • Support with managing the day-to-day correspondence on implementation of plans with the clubs and respective campaigns to help promote child rights and support the country office to build and/or expand relations with a range of partners; • Assist with monitoring and managing the day-to-day activities of the UNICEF volunteer management portal, Golden Volunteer Platform; • Assist the respective campus club focal points to upload activities and support them on outreach accordingly; • Support with the day-to-day activities on the management portal integration with Youth Marketplace Agency (YOMA); • Contribute in identifying opportunities both internal and external with partners and strengthen the involvement of volunteers on priority issues to leverage the voices of volunteers in support of the most vulnerable children; • Contribute through the support of the Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships Section with UNICEF programme sections (education, child protection, health, WASH) to maximize on volunteers’ engagement especially on key campaign areas; • Support ongoing campaigns with campus clubs such as the nutrition campaign; • Support regular and ongoing monitoring efforts for continuous learning of how best to situate the program projects and campaigns in support of the achievement of country programme results; • Support the clubs to publish human interest stories on the impact of the programs they are undertaking; • Contribute to the broader work of the communication and partnerships section and play an active role in UNICEF’s internal communication work; • Through the Chief of Communication and Partnerships, work with UNICEF East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) and UNICEF HQ to promote the role of South Africa’s volunteers at a regional and global level, as well as to coordinate on priority moments; • Coordinate regular and creative ways of learning and exchanging of best practice amongst the executive committees of various clubs; • Support with documenting best practices, lessons learned and success stories; • Participate in ongoing field visits where necessary to UNICEF Club events and project sites to support monitoring of effectiveness, efficacy, impact and sustainability of volunteer and other project activities.

development work and/or Communication; International Relations; Project Coordination. • Demonstrated experience, in any of the above field will be regarded as an advantage; • Previous online engagement promoting child rights and/or human rights, volunteer work on social impact projects and/or experience of another culture (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be an asset; • Previous engagement with and/or interaction with UN agencies will serve as an advantage.

South Africa has good access to medical facilities, high quality schooling and affordable food and other essential items. The UNICEF South Africa office is in Brooklyn, Pretoria, close to shopping outlets and the Embassy quarter of the city. The crime rate is high in South Africa and staff members should be aware of this and the steps that can be taken to mitigate the risks.
