BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., the IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994, and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees.

The VITA Support Intern works under the supervision of the Financial Capability Coordinator to provide capacity building support during a busy tax season with a goal to help low-to-moderate income refugee and new American community members to access free tax preparation services through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

COMMITMENT: January to April 2022, 15-20 hours per week minimum.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide coordination and organization for the operation of the VITA program.

• Provide support to coordinate all tax preparation volunteers.

• Ensure all volunteers adhere to VITA policies, IRS volunteer standards of Conduct and Quality Site Requirements.

• Compile reports and volunteer hours and on a monthly basis.

• Assist with data collection and reporting to program funders.

• Complete the IRS Link and Learn tax training at the Advanced level.

• Providing customer service to clients, as needed.

• Assist with scheduling for client appointments.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Hone project management, cross-cultural communication, financial analysis skills.

2. Increase knowledge of accounting procedures, especially related to real-world tax situations.

3. Participate hands-on to support tax preparation.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor or graduate-level education with interest in non-profit management and/or finance/accounting preferred.

• Previous experience as a VITA volunteer preferred.

• Previous experience with personal income tax preparation preferred.

• High level of computer literacy, familiarity with TaxSlayer software preferred.

• Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail.

• Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills.

• Strong internal drive with the ability to work proactively without continuous oversight.

• Strong commitment to economic empowerment of low-income and underserved populations.

• Patience, flexibility, & creativity.

• Ability to provide in-person and virtual support. May need to use personal vehicle or be able to navigate public transit.
