Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN WOMEN West & Central Africa Regional Office has been supporting multi initiatives through programming, global advocacy and building strategic partners with national governments, civil society, UN agencies, and other bilateral and multilateral development organizations. In this process, UN WOMEN WCARO has contributed to building interest, capacity, and commitment to integrating Gender issues processes in the West and Central Region. UN WOMEN Regional and country offices are supporting a number of other initiatives at regional and country levels and there is a need for visibility.

Reporting to the Regional Communication Specialist (WCARO), the videographer/ photographer is responsible for developing high definition and high standard visual materials for UN Women, including for the UN Women Regional Office website, publications, and for online and offline audiences. S/he is responsible for timely, accurate and high-quality informational materials, such as photos, videos, visual stories from events and from the field, etc.

The results have a substantial impact on the effectiveness of UN Women’s regional communications and outreach efforts, enhancing the visibility, raising awareness and understanding of UN Women and its mission, thus helping ensure UN Women achieves its strategic goals

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage and produce all visual outputs including print design, web graphics, branding for UN Women WCARO programs.
  • Oversee the branding, design principles and guidelines for all UN Women WCARO materials and products, ensuring their consistent application
  • Produce graphic designs for internal and external outputs including web graphics, social media, publications, brief, reports, promotional, and collateral materials
  • Manage and produce photography, videos for UN Women WCARO and its programs.

  • Serve as photographer, and photo editor/manager including implementation and management of a digital photo library and online repository (Flickr), editing, selection, and distribution of photos for internal and external needs.

  • Serve as videographer including production, filming and editing of videos and management of online channels.
  • Create videos and graphics for web and social media forms.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and certifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree plus three years of relevant professional experience
  • Proven graphic design photography and videography experience with a strong portfolio.

Experience

  • Up-to-date and in-depth knowledge of desktop publishing software (e.g. Adobe Suite, PageMaker, InDesign), and photo and video-editing software.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media and web 2.0 platforms, with demonstrated experience generating engaging visual content,
  • Outstanding organizational and planning skills, and exceptionally detail oriented.
  • Solid project management skills, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; proven ability to be flexible in a team-oriented environment with diverse groups of people.
  • Experience working on issues related to development, especially in Africa
  • 4 years of experience in editing and layout of documents, reports, publications
  • Some experience with computerized database management software
  • Proficient with editing software with an eye-catching portfolio.

Language requirements

  • Fluency in English and French is required.
  • Working Knowledge of anther other UN official working language is an asset.
