Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) Sustainable UN (SUN) Unit in Geneva has a mandate to support the UN System’s internal operations as the UN strives towards continual improvement of its environmental sustainability. To support these efforts the SUN team actively engages and communicates to a wide audience of UN staff on tools, approaches, and policy recommendations. To effectively do this high quality and clear communication work products are required. The Sustainable UN facility project, phase IV, has an increased focus on informing and engaging senior level management and improving system-wide reporting, improving knowledge-management within the community of practice while still maintaining a focus on good communication and the exchange of best practices via the Greening the Blue publication and online community. These activities are in support of the key outcome for the project: to accelerate action and mobilize UN entities to further mainstream environmental considerations into all aspects of management and operations and improve upon the monitoring, reporting, and management of environmental impacts of their internal environmental sustainability. Specifically, efforts are needed over the coming year to better: • Increase engagement and raise awareness among personnel in the UN system of the Sustainable UN facility, its role, resources, and achievements as captured in the annual Greening the Blue Report; • Improve interagency understanding of the tools and approaches of the Strategy on Environmental Sustainability in the area of Management; • Increase community use and engagement with the Greening the Blue website and knowledge platform (MS Teams); • Improved messaging and awareness documentation for the broader community, including materials and presentations for potential donors, member states, and other interested parties. The UNEP New York Office Sustainable UN team does not have the relevant expertise in house, to carry out the requires tasks and needs an external consultant. Objective: The UN system-wide efforts to improve environmental sustainability in operations and management are clearly and widely communicated, reported and advocated in line with stakeholders’ expectations. Expected outputs: 1. Communication briefs and infographics on Greening the Blue and Sustainable UN approaches, results and tools. 2. Annual Greening the Blue report design and layout 3. One (1) mock-up for future Greening the Blue Website 4. Three (3) Quarterly reports summarizing Greening the Blue community engagement 5. Delivery of other activities and work as needed by SUN team Performance indicator: 1. Communication briefs and infographics; 2. Final, published Greening the Blue Report: 2024 Edition; 3. Visual mock-ups of future website design; 4. Report on community engagement 5. Report on other activities and work provided to SUN team The consultant will carry out the following project tasks: • Develop draft Greening the Blue briefs and infographic communication products on topics as identified by SUN team. • Finalize and promote communication briefs and infographic products within GtB network and other related Inter-Agency networks; Develop draft Mock-up of annual Greening the Blue Report: 2024 Edition • Review and commenting, and draft inputs on Mock-up of future Greening the Blue website based on visual characteristics, and past analysis of Greening the Blue website. • Monitor community engagement which includes following impacts of increased awareness and utilization of SUN and Greening the Blue resources • Provide guidance and support to the SUN team on communications, launch plans, presentations that are necessary to communicate progress on the work of the team in the course of the contract period, in particular populate the Greening the Blue website with highlights of SUN team work, best practices from UN organizations (case studies).

Qualifications/special skills

  • A first degree or higher in an environmental field, communications, development or social sciences is required. o At least 7 years’ experience in communications, and/or campaigns management in private and/or public sectors is required. o Experiences in communications focused on institutional sustainability is required o Up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including social media, hybrid events, marketing briefs and online media required. o Experience in writing, editing and producing communications /marketing materials is required. o Experience with graphic design, icon creation, and layout is required. o Experience with international organizations is highly desirable. Skills; o Knowledge of the UN system and culture and familiarity with the UN interagency networks is desired. o Creative, autonomous, and resourceful strategist with a track record of proactivity. o Proficiency in software applications such as MS Word, Drupal, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop o Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Exposure to cross cultural and multi-ethnic working environment.

Languages

  • For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language, such as Spanish, is an asset.
