Contract

This is a UNV contract. More about UNV contracts.

UN-Habitat has recently concluded the project ‘The Socio-Economic Empowerment of Vulnerable Women in Ghor Al Safi through Improving Access to Safe, inclusive and Green Public Spaces,’ in partnership with ILO and UNOPS and in collaboration with Zaha Cultural Centre and the Municipality of the Southern Jordan Valley. This project was funded by the United Nations COVID-19 Response and Recovery Multi Partner Trust Fund. This project aimed to enhance the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable women living in Ghor Al Safi through the creation of a safe and green public space and livelihood opportunities.

The project followed an integrated participatory approach that included community consultations and interviews to develop the design. The public space was rehabilitated to include inclusive and safe play areas for children of all ages, with a specific consideration of children with disabilities, shaded seating areas, a multi-use area designated for social and cultural activities and for a market, which will serve as a platform for the creation of livelihood opportunities for vulnerable women, as well as an area that is allocated for the implementation of sustainable agriculture methods. Additionally, this project included rehabilitating and expanding the multi-service community centre within the public space, which will host the different social, cultural, and capacity building activities, including the tailored training on entrepreneurial skills and livelihood creation to enhance socioeconomic conditions of women. UN-Habitat has bought 10 market stalls and equipped the community centre with the necessary furniture and amenities to ensure that the planned activities are best accommodated. A bazaar was organized as the official inauguration of the project, where women were able to sell their products and promote their businesses while their children played nearby or joined classes in the community centre.

This video will help to promote the different outputs of this project and its objectives, while sharing interviews from the local community and partners. This project is considered the first of its kind in the area and will benefit the 37,040 Ghor Al Safi inhabitants, 46% of which are women, as well as those from neighboring communities. The outputs of this project contribute to Jordan's social and economic recovery, whereby the long-term impacts of this project will aid in achieving several of Jordan's strategic priorities and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The video will support UN-Habitat in achieving SDG 11 to Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
