Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The interns will work under the supervision of the Planning Finance and Economy Section and the Mexico Country Office and under the direct supervision of the UN-Habitat Urban Lab. The main focus areas and skills required for the internship are: - Use of data and computational methods for urban analysis and data visualization - GIS and spatial analysis - Digital products/platforms development - Smart city and urban innovation

The Global Solutions Division / Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean internship is for 6 months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the Supervision of the Planning Finance and Economy Section and the Mexico Country Office and under the direct supervision of the UN-Habitat Urban Lab, the intern will:

- Assist in the definition and implementation of the UN-Habitat activities and outputs, such as urban plans, surveying, data gathering, data analysis, data visualization and digital product and tools development for urban planning programs and projects, and support to field missions and scoping missions’ preparation. - Support the office in the development of concrete urban planning and innovation projects, smart city strategies and projects, workshops, technology trainings, and charrettes to promote urban planning and design. - Support in the development of urban analysis, mapping, and data visualization through GIS and computational methods, and of innovative digital products, platforms, and tools to facilitate and visualize processes, projects, and plans. - Assist in the development of UN-Habitat urban planning and innovation documents, guidelines, information materials, and presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials. - Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Task Opportunities: - Familiarize oneself with the United Nations; - Develop digital products, platforms and tools to support and guide urban planning and design; - Apply GIS and computational methods for urban data visualization and spatial analysis; - Familiarize oneself and assisting in the development of content and methodologies on urban planning and innovation.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of Studies: Qualifications and skills required: Skills and interests in the intersection of urban planning and analysis, technology, and design. Currently pursuing or attained advanced degree in Urban Planning, Urban Science, Urban Studies, Architecture, GIS, Geography (Master candidate preferable).

Knowledge in digital product development, use of no-code development platforms, UX-UI design and research, and computational methods for urban analysis will be considered an asset.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of Spanish is desirable.
