Org. Setting and Reporting The Intern Urban Planner will report to Project Advisor for Camp Improvement;

Responsibilities The intern will support the ongoing CIP projects in Rashidieh, Burj El-Barajneh camps, and other newly established CIP projects.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

- Support in developing integrated spatial diagnosis of targeted refugee camps. - Support in developing cartographic outputs of the ongoing camp improvement projects - Provide GIS support to analysis, planning, and design inputs for the ongoing camp improvement projects - Support the development of the technical and normative outputs of the camp improvement projects - Support in strengthening CIP's visibility and knowledge management.

Asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Tailor's language, tone, style, and format to match the audience. 3- Creating and Innovating

Education a) Be enrolled in an accredited first-level, higher education programme (Bachelor or equivalent); or b) Be enrolled in an accredited graduate school programme (Master or higher or equivalent); or c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in paragraphs a and b above) or UNRWA Vocational Technical Centre, d) Field of study: urban planning, regional planning, urban design, architecture, architectural engineering, or any other equivalent field. e) The candidate should have a portfolio of maps and designs of which they are the author. f) Good cartographic skills are required. g)The ability to perform geo-processing, geo-referencing, land use classification, ortho-rectification, and other GIS techniques is desirable. h) Previous experience in GIS, urban planning, and design with proven experience in drawing, cartography, and preparing graphical material using computer-assisted design tools is an advantage. i) Previous experience in developing contexts will be considered an asset. j) Strong graphic representation skills and good hand drawing/sketching/mapping are assets.

Work Experience No working experience is required for this internship. Your training, education, advanced course work, or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis to produce urban diagnostics, is required.

Languages Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

ELIGIBILITY Applicants to UNRWA’s volunteer/Intern programme must, at the time of application, meet all of the following requirements: a) successful completion of, at a minimum, an accredited first-level, higher education programme (Bachelor or equivalent) at least more than one year from the date of graduation; and b) reside at the duty station of the volunteer assignment, with a valid permit to reside and to work at the duty station, if the assignment is not remote.

- An applicant is not eligible for selection as an intern/volunteer if he or she – a) have served as an intern or volunteer for a total of 11 monhts; b) has provided incorrect, incomplete or misleading information on his or her application during a selection process or committed plagiarism; c) appears in the Clear Check database or has been dismissed from a United Nations entity or any other employer for disciplinary reasons or for abandonment of post; d) has resigned or otherwise separated from a United Nations entity when an investigation or disciplinary process has not been completed. The applicant remains ineligible until the investigation or disciplinary processes has concluded, and the applicant has been fully cleared of the allegations of misconduct raised against him or her; or e) is named on the Sanction List established by the United Nations Security Council.

NON-PAYMENT AND SOCIAL SECURITY - Intern/Volunteer assignments are not remunerated or provided a stipend. Selected interns/volunteers must secure sufficient financial resources for their direct and indirect expenses, including transportation, accommodation, medical and accident insurance, and associated expenses and/or claims.

- The Agency accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the volunteer or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during the intern/volunteer assignment.Interns/Volunteers are not eligible to participate in the Agency’s social security scheme including but not limited to health insurance and pension or provident fund. Interns/Volunteers must present proof to the relevant Field Resources Section of medical and accident insurance coverage prior to commencing their assignment and such proof of insurance coverage must be retained in the electronic official status file.

- Selected interns/volunteers must present a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the intern/volunteer assignment which shall be retained in the electronic official status file.

STATUS AS INTERNS OR VOLUNTEERS OF THE AGENCY - Interns and volunteers are not staff members of the Agency.

- Interns and volunteers shall not be sought or accepted as substitutes for staff to be recruited against posts authorized for the implementation of mandated programmes, operations, and activities. An internship or a volunteer assignment must only be offered when it is considered that such an experience can mutually benefit the Agency and the selected intern/volunteer.

- Interns and volunteers must not represent the Agency in any official capacity, must not perform supervisory functions, and must not exercise any certifying or approving authority.

- Interns and volunteers may apply to any vacancies of the Agency at any time as external candidates, provided that they meet the stipulated minimum requirements. Participation inthe Agency’s internship or volunteer programme does not give rise to, or expectation of employment with the Agency during or after such assignment. An intern/volunteer isrequired to undertake a mandatory separation of 30 days following the conclusion of theirintern or volunteer placement and commencement of a subsequent contractual engagement.

- In the event a former Intern or Volunteer is contracted by the Agency under a different contract modality, including as a staff member, the terms of the contract shall be fully applicable without regard to any period of former service as an Intern or Volunteer. Service computation dates will not take into account prior service as an Intern or Volunteer.

- Under the Agency’s commitment to zero tolerance of sexual misconduct in the workplace (i.e., sexual harassment/sexual exploitation and abuse), interns and volunteers are encouraged to report incidents of sexual misconduct to the Department of Internal Oversight Services (DIOS) under the Agency’s reporting procedures.

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT - Interns and volunteers shall observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, and directives of the Agency, notwithstanding their status as described in paragraphs in the "STATUS AS INTERNS OR VOLUNTEERS OF THE AGENCY" section of the present instruction;

- Interns and volunteers shall: a)respect the impartiality and independence required and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the Agency; b)refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on UNRWA, and shall not engage in any activity that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UNRWA; and c)adhere to the same standards of conduct that apply to staff members of the Agency including compliance with local and national laws.

- As part of acceptance of his/her agreement, each intern and volunteer must certify that he/she has not, does not, and will not engage in any transactions or the provision of resources of support to individuals and organizations associated with, receiving any type of training for or engaged in any act or offence of terrorism. - Interns and volunteers must not disclose any confidential information of the Agency. Unless otherwise authorized, interns and volunteers shall not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external party, any information that has become known to them by reason of their association with UNRWA, that they knowor ought to have known has not been made public. This includes through the use of social media. They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the Spokesperson, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligations remain after the end of the internship.

- Interns and volunteers shall provide their supervisor with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. UNRWA shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights, and trademarks, with regard to material that bears a direct relation to, or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of UNRWA, the interns and volunteers shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the Agency in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law.

OFFICIAL HOLIDAYS AND AUTHORIZED ABSENCE - Interns and volunteers shall observe the Agency’s official holidays applicable at the duty station of their assignment.

- Interns and volunteers on a full-time schedule are allowed to be absent for two working days per month or for those on a part-time schedule of 50% an absence of one working day per month, subject to prior approval of their supervisor.

- Interns and volunteers who are unable to report to duty due to illness must inform their supervisor as early as possible.

VISA AND TRAVEL - If the placement requires presence in the office, interns and volunteers must be legally residing at the duty station or personally apply for and obtain a valid visa for the duty station prior to commencing the internship or volunteer assignment. Costs and arrangements for visas and travel are the responsibility of interns. THIRD-PARTY CLAIMS AND LOSS OR DAMAGE TO PERSONAL EFFECTS - The Agency is not responsible for any claims by any persons, organizations, or entities, where the loss or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of actions by the intern or volunteer during their assignment.

- The Agency accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the intern’s or volunteer’s assignment.

TERMINATION - An internship or volunteer assignment may be terminated by either party at any time without cause by giving a minimum of five working days’ written notice. In the case of findings of misconduct by intern/volunteer, an intern/volunteer agreement will be terminated by the Agency with immediate effect.
