This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Programme Management Officer-Human Settlements or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV [Urban Planner] will:

  • Develop updated Kalobeyei/Kakuma Spatial plan for the communities’ neighborhoods to be coordinated in the field level with different partners.
  • Support the implementation of public space facilities that include construction of physical facilities and coordination with the implementation partner.
  • Development of Kalobeyei Settlement rehabilitation plan through carrying out detailed survey for public infrastructure, utilization of FGDS and key informants and prioritization of action areas for construction and rehabilitation.
  • Support in installation of underground water tank within the Kalobeyei Settlement.
  • Coordination with UN agencies and other partners on technical matters
  • Draft substantive and technical advisory reports for on-going project on the field
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

in urban planning and design or urban studies

Experience remark

  • At least three years’ experience in urban planning and development in an organizational environment or private sector on spatial planning.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of urban planning theories, concepts and approaches relevant to urban planning and urban policy development.
  • Proven and demonstrable experience in design research and implementation of design projects related to urban planning issues preferably in developing countries will be an added advantage.
  • Experience with national or local government urban planning departments or project implementation is an added advantage
  • Demonstrable experience in designing, developing and implementing advocacy materials in urban planning fields
  • Strong networking, team work and management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in diverse environments
  • Demonstrable effective written communications skills including the ability to prepare and present reports, proposals, and procedures
  • Effective public relations and public speaking skills

Language skills

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
