This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of [Programme Management Officer-Human Settlements] or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV [Urban Development Specialist] will:

  • Provide technical support in the development of urban governance platforms and networking between governments, institutions, businesses and communities of interest and practice within the system of cities and towns in Turkana West to foster trade, investment, knowledge and information exchange, innovation, and collaborative governance.
  • Organize three Corridor Development Forums in Turkana West involving government, businesses, international agencies, NGOs, community representatives and stakeholders with interest in the long-term development of the corridor
  • Support the establishment of at least three local industry associations, communities of interest or practice in the Kakuma-Kalobeyei cluster. These might include ITC, energy, education, health, design, food and/or construction.
  • Develop mechanisms to support the development of an enterprise hub and catalyst for economic activities to facilitate the connection of the Kakuma-Kalobeyei cluster into the economic development corridor of Turkana West
  • Provide report upon conducting survey and collecting data with experts on the ground for sustainable economy for corridor development in Turkana county
  • Draft report of sustainable economy for corridor development in Turkana county
  • Draft a policy paper on sustainable economy of corridor development in Turkana county.
  • Update and draft bi-monthly donor report.
  • Finalize a paper on participatory planning process of UN-habitat in Kakuma
  • Conduct Capacity building workshops of Turkana county government to integrate migration into city development approaches
  • Conduct surveys on capacity assessment of Turkana county government and draft a report.
  • Develop a concept note for future programme in Turkana county.
  • Support EUTF, GOJ projects in Kakuma field office especially in linking the projects with the county Government, UN agencies and other humanitarian partners and supporting any participatory workshops/meetings with partners.

Educational additional comments

  • University degree (Bachelor's or equivalent) in Rural development, Agricultural science, Social Studies, or related field that is relevant in sustainable urban development.

Experience remark

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in dealing with sustainable urban development is required. Relevant experience in architecture, design and urban designing such as public space, sustainable construction, infrastructure and community development is desirable. Working experience in conducting social economic survey and analyzing is an advantage.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of urban planning theories, concepts and approaches relevant to urban planning and urban policy development.
  • Proven and demonstrable experience in design research and implementation of design projects related to urban planning issues preferably in developing countries will be an added advantage.
  • Experience with national or local government urban planning departments or project implementation is an added advantage
  • Demonstrable experience in designing, developing, and implementing advocacy materials in urban planning fields
  • Strong networking, teamwork, and management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in diverse environments
  • Demonstrable effective written communications skills including the ability to prepare and present reports, proposals, and procedures
  • Effective public relations and public speaking skills
