As our cities and towns grow at unprecedented rates, setting the social, political, cultural and environmental trends of the world, sustainable urbanization is one of the most pressing challenges for the global community in the 21st century. In 1950, one-third of the world’s population lived in cities. Just 50 years later, this proportion has risen to one-half and will continue to grow to two-thirds, or six billion people, by 2050. Cities are now home to more than half of humankind. They are the hub for national production and consumption - economic processes that generate wealth and opportunity. But they also create disease, crime, pollution and poverty.

To sustain the pace of higher economic growth, while ensuring social inclusion and avoiding adverse environmental impacts, countries need to develop policies that can ensure a comprehensive and integrated approach for sustainable expansion incl. improvements in the sectors of mobility, waste and water and sanitation.

The Urban Basic Services Section works with national governments and local authorities in developing and implementing sustainable urban development solutions by offering a comprehensive package of knowledge, advocacy tools and technical assistance including innovative urban development solutions. The branch supports UN-Habitat’s work with governments in introducing better transport systems, improving access to water and sanitation systems and in advancing solid waste management in cities.

UN-Habitat is supporting a number of cities in improving access to basic services. Through ongoing project such as the Urban Pathways project and the SOLUTIONSplus project, UN-Habitat supports cities in the uptake of low carbon basic services, including urban mobility. With support from the UN Road Safety Fund, UN-Habitat is currently implementing a project to improve road safety standards in five African countries. The agency also provides support in training officials on sustainable mobility topics and publishes, toolkits, guides and other reference material for practitioners and policy makers. In addition, UN-Habitat implements the WasteWiseCities Programme to address the increasing global waste management crisis and provide capacity to implement solutions.

This UNV position is located in the Urban Basic Services Section of UN-Habitat (Urban Practices Branch, Global Solutions Division).

Under the direct supervision of the team leader, Urban Mobility, Urban Basic Services Section, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Support the Urban Basic Services Section in its communication and outreach activities through videography in the field of urban basic services with a focus on urban mobility and waste management. The candidate is expected to produce videos - which will include shooting video or sourcing footage, scripting and subtitles, in different formats including short form for Social Media as well as for meetings and editing. • Support photography of ongoing projects in the field of urban basic services. • Record statements and interviews with high level stakeholders on the topic of urban basic services and edit them for publishing. • Support the development of training modules under the ongoing urban basic services related projects.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
