Overview

Enhance staff welfare and social programs for improved quality of life.

You have:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Sociology, Social Work, Social Science or similar discipline.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of progressively responsible experience in event management or related areas is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant software is required.
  • Fluent in English is mandatory.
  • Additional training in counseling, psychology, or a related field is an advantage.
  • Driving license is required.

Contract

This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Human Resources Officer or their designate, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Improve the recreational and social opportunities for staff by convening representative Staff Welfare Committees;
  • Develops programmes designed to improve the quality of life of staff members within the mission area.
  • Monitors environmental factors that could lead to unhealthy life style.
  • Collaborate with the mission’s Staff Welfare Committees to develop programmes designed to improve the quality of life for staff members within the mission area through organizing regular recreational activities for staff (such as outings, sporting, and other social events);
  • Increase staff awareness and information about social and recreational opportunities available in the mission through contributing to the induction training of new staff, producing guides to local amenities, regularly updating information posted on the mission intranet, facilitating access to housing information, and development links with local resources as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the mission Training Officer to implement “Cultural Awareness” training for staff in the mission.
  • Establish an information resource center and organizes a book/DVD library for staff.
  • Facilitate increased welfare initiatives in the team sites through offering support to committees and fostering the development of new committees.
  • Participate in developing the expertise, profile, and capacity of the Welfare Unit by identifying funding opportunities.
  • Assesses welfare needs within the mission and provides a focal point for welfare initiatives within the mission.
  • Acts as a non-clinical counselling resource to any staff member within the mission area requiring non-judgmental support and assistance in resolving any personal and/or work-related problem(s) in consultation with the Staff Counsellor as necessary.
  • Organizes memorial services for international civilian staff in cases of death in the mission area and acts as focal point/resource person for these families.
  • Oversees planning, management, and accounting of staff welfare funds; provides financial accountability for all funds received, held or disbursed for welfare activities and be accountable for all facilities or property received and under their control for implementing welfare and recreation activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced university degree (Master’s Degree or equivalent) in Sociology, Social Work, Social Science or similar discipline. A relevant combination of two years related experience and education an in a closely related area of expertise can be considered in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Additional training in counselling, psychology, or a related field is an advantage
