This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Chief of Investigations, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Undertakes preliminary assessments: As a member of the investigations team, formulates investigation plans to ensure that all appropriate lines of inquiry are identified, and investigation resources are used effectively and efficiently to factually determine the issues relevant to an investigation.
  • Identifies, collects and analyses information, using software internal data and open source information relevant to investigations (forensic accounting/ investigation) demonstrating an understanding of information security and confidentiality issues relevant to investigation; Collects, records and handles evidence appropriately, ensuring adherence to the requisite standards, policies and procedures.
  • Advances investigations: plans and conducts investigative steps in UNICEF in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures. Documents investigative steps in accordance with applicable policies and procedures and produces case-related analytical pieces (i.e. case chronologies, etc.).
  • Reporting of investigation findings: identifies result of investigations, prepares reports on investigation findings that are submitted to the Chief of Investigations for review before onward submission for quality assurance review and final approval. Prepares closure memos and other closing documents.
  • Undertakes research and/or other tasks as assigned by the Chief of Investigations, in support of the Investigations Section.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Educational additional comments

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law, criminal investigation, or related field. A first-level degree (Bachelor's or equivalent) in the specified fields with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Language skills

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise details

  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in legal activities and/or investigation related functions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Good organizational skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Working knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic is an advantage. Knowledge of another UN language is considered as an asset.
